How to Prevent Fires in Your Garage

July 24, 2019/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Many garages serve as in-home storage facilities where families keep items that are used outside or which cannot fit inside their home. Whether it be a car, summer toys, or old family photographs, garages are a great place to store things. However, many people also place dangerous chemicals and combustible materials inside of their garages. Sometimes, machinery such as a garage door or othergarage hardware can create friction or sparks, which can lead to a fire. Because of this potential danger, it is wise to take steps to prevent a possible fire in your garage.

1. Store Combustible and Flammable Materials Safely

This step may sound obvious, but a surprising number of people do not store flammable materials such as gasoline or oil safely in their garage. The excuse for doing so is that a person never thought an accident or fire would happen to them. The truth is that gas and oil can very quickly catch fire, and even the fumes are explosive. While it is advisable that you do not keep these materials in your garage at all, if you must do so, then be sure they are in properly sealed containers and stored away from electrical outlets and heaters.

2. Follow Safety Procedures When Using Electrical Outlets and Extension Cords

Not only are extension cords a tripping hazard, but they can cause fires as well. Old extension cords or poorly maintained electrical outlets can start fires due to sparks from old or exposed wiring. In addition, an electrical surge can cause equipment and wiring to be burnt out, and repairs may cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars.

3. Prepare for a Potential Fire

Sadly, not all preventative measures can stop garage fires. That is why you need to prepare for every possibility. You can do so by purchasing smoke detectors to alert you if a piece of equipment in your garage is smoking. You should also keep a fire extinguisher in your garage so that you can stop any potential fire before it engulfs the garage and burns your entire house down.

3 Simple Ideas for Customizing Your Garage

July 17, 2019/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

When we think of custom garages, we tend to think of elaborate, high-tech designs which are likely to come with a high cost. However, there are many ways to customize your garage at a low price by using simple techniques. In many cases, these can be accomplished by reorganizing your garage and taking advantage of minimalist design styles. If you are looking for easy ways to customize your garage, here are a few ideas:

Use Old Doors as Shelving

In every home, the front, back, or side doors are likely to eventually need to be replaced. Instead of throwing them away, use those rickety old doors as shelving in your garage. You can take the door and cut it in half and to the needed length. Be sure to find strong L-brackets and securely install your “new” shelves onto the walls of your garage.

Use Boxes and Hooks for Storage

You would not believe how many people create piles of equipment and toys in their garages, making it very difficult to find an item when they want it. One of the simplest ways to customize your garage is by creating methods of efficient storage, including shelves where items are stored in boxes that are grouped according to how they are used. If some of your things are too big to be placed in storage bins or boxes, then you can install hooks that will allow you to hang these items on the wall or even the ceiling.

Get an Efficient Workbench

For many families, at least part of the garage is known as the “dad zone” where the family tools and hardware are kept. Tools are often piled up on a small desk or bench in the garage, and they may rust and slowly degrade from ill upkeep. By upgrading to a high-quality workbench, your family will be able to hang and efficiently store the family’s tools, allowing you to find them easily when you need them. Further, your workbench can function as a work area where home repairs can be centralized.

3 Examples of Top-Notch Custom Garages

July 10, 2019/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Whether your garage is used for storing your car, as a zone for family activities, or as a man cave, you are likely to customize the space in one way or another. However, those who have a little extra dough are able to take garage customization to another level. If you are interested in creating a custom garage, then here are three garages which might offer you a little bit of inspiration:

The Mayor’s Garage

A little known fact about New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio is that he collects custom cars and has built a custom garage to hold them. His garage, which he spent 10 years developing and completing, contains about 800 square feet of flooring. He boasts that it is very durable and waterproof, allowing messes from things such as oil spills to be easily cleaned up. Inside, he stores his 1995 black Chevy Impala SS, a ’69 blue Chevy Camaro, and a ’57 Chevy Bel Air. In addition to the cars, he has a collection of around 500 license plates which he has gathered since childhood.

The Live-in Garage

A great example of a unique custom garage is the one owned by Natalie Adams in Oakland Park, Florida. Ms. Adams collects JDM Hondas, which are only available in the Japanese market. After storing her cars in a self-storage facility for several years, she decided to create a unique live-in garage to better protect her vehicles. Ms. Adams took a 1950s warehouse and customized it into a half-home, half-garage living area. Approximately 60 percent of her home is a part of her garage, and 40 percent is her living space. By choosing to sacrifice her kitchen, she was able to create a large storage area where she can protect her Hondas while still living comfortably.

The Show Room

One of the most impressive custom garages can be found in Águeda, Portugal and was designed by the company Paulo Martins Arquitectura & Design. The concept behind this custom garage was to create a garage that is part showroom and part fortress. Outside, the garage is built with aluminum siding and a steel framework which protects the collection of BMWs, motorcycles, and other equipment inside from dangers. However, the interior has a minimalistic design with a smooth epoxy flooring that is lit by dozens of LED spotlights. The owner is said to regularly spend time in his garage simply relaxing and admiring his collection.

What Is the Best Garage Door Opener for iPhone Users?

June 26, 2019/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Garage door openers have entered into the new digital space of the Internet of Things (IoT). As we have previously mentioned on this blog, there are many different kinds of electric garage door openers that can connect to your home’s Wi-Fi and allow your garage door to be operated wirelessly by a mobile device. However, when deciding which kind of equipment to use for your garage, it is important to consider whether it will work with your preferred mobile operating system. Many people are surprised to learn how different an Android phone can be from an iPhone, and they may be even more surprised to learn that different mobile operating systems interact differently with various IoT devices. If you are an iPhone user and are considering getting an IoT garage door opener, then one option that can provide benefits is the Insignia Wi-Fi remote controller.

What Is the Insignia Wi-Fi Remote Controller?

The Insignia Wi-Fi remote controller is an inexpensive option to consider when modernizing your garage. It consists of two separate devices, the first being the controller which commands your garage door opener to open or close. The second is a sensor which confirms whether this action has occurred and releases a beeping noise that alerts everyone in the vicinity that the garage door is about to open or close. The Insignia works in sync with Siri on an iPhone or any other Apple device, and it can be controlled through voice commands, such as “Siri, open the garage door.”

What are the Benefits of the Insignia?

The Insignia is a great garage door opener remote for Apple users because it does not use a separate app, and it is cost effective. Many garage door openers have an associated application that must be downloaded onto one’s phone and other devices in order to use it. The problem with this is that if there is a problem with the software, then the app could become inoperable, and an expensive IoT electric garage door opener may no longer reliably open and close one’s garage door.

The Insignia device does not come with an app but can be accessed by pressing its icon on the iPhone’s home menu. In other words, without the need for an app, the Insignia works more naturally with your iPhone. In addition, the Insignia is inexpensive, since it has a retail price of only $50.00.

Should I Install Low-e Glass Windows in My Garage?

June 19, 2019/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

During the summer, we are all trying to find a way to keep our homes and garages cool. In the hotter months of the year, this usually means keeping the air conditioning on 24/7, which can really increase the amount of electric bills. Thus, we all try to search for alternative means of keeping the summer heat at bay. One such way is through using low-e glass windows. If you are planning to replace the windows in your home or garage, then you may want to consider using low-e glass windows to make your home an oasis of cool during the summer.

What Are Low-e Glass Windows?

Low-e glass is a relatively new advancement in window technology. Low-e stands for low emissivity, and emissivity refers to the amount of energy released from an object. In a nutshell, low-e windows contain a small filament in the glass which reflects heat from the sun’s rays. This filament is invisible to the human eye and is designed to block UV rays while allowing natural light into your home. During the summer, as the sun is beating down, these windows keep hot and humid temperatures outside where they belong. In addition, a similar process will take place during the winter, and low-e windows will reflect heat generated in your home back inside. In a way, low-e glass is like a natural thermostat that helps keep your home fresh during the summer and warm during the winter.

Types of Low-e Windows

There are two types of low-e window coatings: passive and solar control. Passive low-e coatings are designed to passively control the flow of heat in and out of a home, creating a more natural environment. Solar control coating is designed to control the amount of sunlight and solar heat allowed into a home or building and reducing the amount of energy used to artificially keep an environment cool through air conditioning.

Why Should I Get Low-e Windows?

As mentioned above, low-e windows block harmful UV light. UV light is the kind of light which causes sunburns, but it can also cause carpets, furniture, and other home appliances to fade. By upgrading to low-e windows, you will not only keep your home cooler, but you will also be protecting valuables from the slow damage that can be caused by harmful sunlight.

Should I Get a Keyless Lock for My House and/or Garage?

June 12, 2019/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the area where technology and home appliances meet. As we have mentioned in previous blogs, many new wireless features are available with traditional home features, including new kinds of electric garage door openers and mobile apps that allow homeowners to monitor their home while they are away. But one of the newer and more revolutionary areas where home appliances have intersected with IoT is in wireless, or keyless, locks for entry doors.

What Is a Keyless Lock?

A keyless lock is exactly as it sounds: a lock which does not require a key to be opened. If you consider the number of times you may have had to rush out of the home to make a meeting or event and forgot your house keys, the appeal of a lock that does not need a key becomes evident. By avoiding the potential for lost keys, this type of lock could put the possibility of locking yourself out of your residence into the distant past.

How Do Keyless Locks Work?

There are many different kinds of keyless locks, and they work in a variety of different ways. Most keyless locks connect to a home’s wireless router and internet setup, allowing a homeowner to lock and unlock their doors from anywhere they have an internet connection. A smartphone app provides control over who enters and leaves their home. With this type of keyless lock, you can give specific individuals, such as family, friends, and delivery drivers limited or unlimited access to your home as you see fit.

Other keyless locks use Bluetooth and are opened by a wireless transmitter which can be hung around a person’s keychain or kept in a pocket or purse. These types of keyless locks require a person to be within a certain distance before the door can be unlocked.

The feature which nearly all keyless locks have is that they lock automatically. This means that if you leave in a rush to work in the morning, you do not have to worry about locking your door, because your lock will now do it for you.

Should I Get a Keyless Lock, and How Do I install it?

Keyless locks can be quite expensive, with the best models being between $200 and $300 per unit. Due to this cost, it is best to perform research on what kind of door you have, what types of features you would like to have, and whether a keyless lock is a necessary added security precaution.

Installing a keyless lock, while not being overly difficult, requires a knack and skill for home maintenance. While you might be capable of doing it yourself, if you do decide to upgrade to a keyless lock, it is a good idea to call a professional to do the installation for you.

When Should I Lubricate My Garage Door?

June 5, 2019/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Summer is upon us, and that means your garage door is likely to see a lot more activity. Garage doors are used significantly less during the winter months, since they are only opened and closed when the family car is needed. However, in the summer, a garage often becomes the home’s most used entrance and exit. It may be opened or closed each time your children fetch their bikes and toys, when you and your spouse retrieve your lawnmower or gardening equipment, or for hundreds of other different reasons. This extra work that your garage door performs can create the potential for wear and tear. To keep your garage door functional and avoid causing problems during the summer, you need to make sure that it is well lubricated.

The Purpose of Lubrication

Lubrication has been employed by builders for thousands of years. When two rough surfaces meet, this causes friction that can lead to damage over time. A lubricant provides a slick filling that coats the spots where hard surfaces meet, allowing for better mobility and reducing the potential for damage. Your garage door is no different. Each time you open and close your garage door, its tough metal and plastic components scrape against each other. Without that smooth coating of lubrication, the garage door will quickly degrade and cease to function.

How Do You Know When Your Garage Door Needs to Be Lubricated?

The need for lubrication is often very obvious. A poorly lubricated garage door will make a sound worse than the proverbial fingernails against a chalkboard. If your garage door’s springs and rails require some work, they will produce very loud and noticeable scraping, clanging, or rattling sound. If it gets bad enough, your garage door will make a noise so loud that it will reverberate throughout the entire house. A well-lubricated garage door will make very little sound, and noise will be limited to what you hear when the motor of your garage door opener is operating. If your garage door is stuttering each time you open and close it, then chances are it needs some maintenance.

What Parts of the Garage Door Should Be Lubricated?

A garage door may produce noise if its parts are dirty. Before lubricating, be sure to clean every inch of your garage door by giving it a good thorough dusting, and clean away any dirt that has built up. After this is complete, be sure to lubricate therollers and springs, since these are the parts which do the most work. Typically, a can of WD-40 should be sufficient, but there are other specialty sprays which can be purchased at your local home improvement store.

How to Test your Garage Door Spring for Damage

May 29, 2019/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Your garage door has a set life span. Parts will eventually degrade due to use, wear, and tear, and they will need to be replaced. However, few parts of a garage door system will typically degrade as quickly as the garage door spring. The spring is the most important part in helping your garage door to function. It allows your garage door to open and close without damage being done to the structure of your garage, but each time you open and close your door, the spring gradually gets weaker and weaker. This means that it is essential to regularly inspect the spring and ensure that it is able to function correctly. When checking your garage door spring, there are few things to look for:

  • A good test to determine whether your garage door spring is beginning to falter is to open your garage door manually. Disengage your automatic garage door opener and manually raise the garage door to a variety of heights, including the very top and the midway point. If the door is able to stay in those positions by itself, then the spring is still usable. However, if the door moves or falls back down to the ground, then the spring needs to be replaced.
  • Other signs that the wear and tear have finally gotten to your spring can be seen upon a physical inspection. If there are significant warping, corrosion, or gaps in the spring, then this is a clear sign that the spring is getting old and should be replaced soon.
  • The most obvious signs that the spring on your garage door is in its final days can be witnessed during its day to day use. If your garage door has begun to get “jerky” when it opens and closes, further inspection might be called for. Also, if your garage door begins to fall too quickly when closing, that is another signal that the spring is beginning to lose its full functionality.

Your garage door spring only has a set number of uses, and after years of operation, it will break down and fail. The Best Garage Door Openers of 2019…So Far

May 22, 2019/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

The garage door opener industry is like almost every other industry in that it has been dramatically affected by the influx of new smart technologies. In previous blogs, we have discussed how electric garage door openers can now be connected to your smart devices, such as smartphones, Amazon Echo, Google Home, etc. to allow you to open and monitor your garage more efficiently. Smart technology keeps on evolving, and so do garage door openers. Here is a short list of some of the most advanced garage door openers available at this point in 2019:

  • Chamberlain Group B550 Smartphone-Controlled Ultra-Quiet & Strong Belt Drive Garage Door Opener. The garage door works with the myQ App, which can be installed on your smart device, allowing you access to your garage door remotely. This opener allows Amazon Prime members to give Amazon delivery people the ability to enter your garage and deliver packages safely while you are away. Additionally, the B550 uses a steel-reinforced belt drive system which is both sturdy and silent. No longer will a noisy garage door disturb the quiet in your home.
  • Chamberlain B510 Ultra-Quiet & Strong Belt Drive Garage Door Opener. This is a slightly cheaper alternative model to the B550 mentioned above. It includes all the structural security and quiet opening and closing of the garage door but does not include smart technology. If you are looking for a reliable solution without the need for remote access, this garage door opener is for you.
  • The Genie Company Model 2128 Opener. This month, Genie Company announced that they were updating this model to be connectable to the Aladdin Connect system. This system allows homeowners to integrate their garage doors with both Alexa and Google Assistant devices. Homeowners can set schedules for when their garage door can be opened, and they can give friends and family members “virtual keys” through their smart devices. This opener uses a DC motor that is small and easy to lift, meaning it can often be installed in garages more quickly than other garage door openers.

How to Perform Maintenance on Your Garage Door Remote

May 15, 2019/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Recently, some people in North Olmsted, Ohio began to experience problems with their electric garage door openers. Their garage door opener remotes and similar devices began to behave sporadically, and many people had difficulty opening and closing their garage doors. A variety of fixes were attempted, but typical maintenance, such as changing the batteries in key fobs, was not effective.

As the issue progressed, it was determined that the problem was being caused by a much stronger radio signal operating on the same frequency used by garage door remotes. After an investigation was conducted, it was discovered that the cause of the issue was a device created by a local inventor. This person was using the device to alert him when people were at his front door while he was in his basement, and the machine operated on the same frequency used by most garage door remotes but was so strong that it blocked their signal. Correcting this issue resolved the problem for residents of the neighborhood.

While most people will not need to address this type of issue, this story should still remind all homeowners to perform proper maintenance on both their garage doors and their garage door opener remotes. Here a few simple tips to help with that maintenance:

Check the Frequency of Your Opener

Garage door openers typically operate either on a 315MHz or 390MHz frequency. This a generic frequency that is commonly used by short-range remote devices. However, as the example of North Olmsted teaches us, there is always the possibility of a stronger signal on the same frequency preventing the remote from operating as it should. An excellent way to avoid this problem is to check the other devices in your home, such as your wi-fi, to see if they are operating on one of the two frequencies mentioned above. If they are, it is advisable that you consult a professional to determine an alternative frequency for them, which will help you avoid any interference.

Clean the Remote

If you keep your remote in your garage while you are home, dirt and grime could collect on the device. If your device uses an infrared signal rather than transmitting a radio signal, you should clean around the IR lens, or the “eye,” to ensure that the signal can be properly transmitted.

Check the Batteries

Sometimes, a garage door opener may not function correctly because of a more obvious problem. It can be a good idea to keep spare batteries for your garage door remote in your car. If your device stops working, you can swap the batteries out, and it will most likely start working again.
