3 Signs That Your Garage Siding May Need to be Replaced

December 18, 2019/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

For many garage owners, the installation of new siding is not a renovation that is at the top of their list of priorities. However, inclement weather conditions and longevity can leave a garage’s siding in desperate need of replacement. Considering the amount of damage that cracks, holes, and warped siding can cause to the structure of a garage, property owners should routinely conduct inspections. There are several indicators that can help determine whether new siding is needed:

Holes and Water Damage

As previously mentioned, if it is discovered that your garage siding is not in good condition, it is possible that additional damage may occur. Tiny holes in your siding are typically caused by animals or insects. In addition, breaks in your siding can also provide an entryway for water, snow, and mud. Bubbles may start to appear just under the surface of your siding if moisture is trapped. Water damage can lead to mold, fungus, or mildew, and it is an immediate sign that siding needs to be replaced.

Loose or Missing Siding

If you notice that pieces of your siding are not properly attached to your garage or have completely fallen off, it is imperative that they be replaced as soon as possible. When the structural wood of a garage is exposed to the elements, this can cause severe damage. If a few pieces of siding become detached after a storm, it is possible that they can simply be put back into place. However, if multiple pieces have become disconnected or are missing, you may need to contact a professional to replace your garage’s siding.

Warped Siding or Rotting Wood

In order to determine the strength and condition of your siding and the structural wood behind it, both a visual inspection and a physical examination should be completed. If you recognize siding that looks misshapen or any sort of rotting wood, poking the material with a sharp object could help you decide if the material is in good shape. Soft or rotting wood beneath a garage’s siding is a strong indicator that a replacement is needed.

3 Easy Steps to Turn Your Garage into a Personal Gym

December 11, 2019/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Physical fitness can be an important aspect of our everyday lifestyles. Depending on your schedule, your circumstances, and other factors outside of your control, belonging to a gym or exercising outdoors may not always be possible. If you are looking to incorporate a workout into your day but wish to do so in the privacy of your own home, renovating your garage to turn it into a space for exercise may be your answer. To maintain your garage’s curb appeal while maximizing your workout, several steps can be taken to create your perfect garage gym.

Understand Your Space

Before a renovation project begins, it is important to consider every factor. Your garage may provide valuable space to park vehicles and store miscellaneous items. Do you want to convert your entire garage into a gym, only use a portion of the space, or add additional room for gym equipment? Clearing out your garage and understanding how much space you have can help with the decision-making process. In addition, having an idea of what workout equipment you want and the amount of space it will take up can help you ensure that your garage gym will meet your needs.

Prepare Your Garage

You will want to be sure your garage will be suitable for your workout equipment while meeting your exercise needs. Weights can be dropped to the ground, which could damage the floor or other items in the garage. Furthermore, some workouts may be better completed without shoes. Depending on your specific needs, new flooring may need to be added. Generally, a form of rubber flooring is considered the best option for a personal gym. Before this material is installed, any structural concerns in the underlying floor, such as cracks or holes, should be addressed.

If you plan to utilize your personal gym year-round, you may want to consider installing heating or air conditioning equipment, and you should make sure your garage is properly insulated. The Chicago area can have bitterly cold winters and blisteringly hot summers, and you will want to keep these temperatures from affecting your ability to get the exercise you need.

Consider Additional Luxuries

Depending on your personal needs and the types of exercises you will be doing, you may want to add certain amenities to your garage. For example, you may perform yoga workouts with the assistance of instructional videos, so you may need to set aside space for a television. You may also want to add a sound system, a mini fridge for sports drinks, or devices that will allow you to easily make protein shakes or smoothies. As part of your garage renovations, you can design your area to incorporate the necessary appliances, or you can leave room to add these items at a later date.

How Can a Garage Renovation Help With Winter Tool Storage?

November 27, 2019/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

As the weather starts to get colder and colder in the Chicago area, homeowners are beginning to pack up their summertime equipment. Lawn and gardening appliances are swapping places with shovels, salt, and snow blowers. As you are moving these items around, you may notice that your garage is in need of proper tool storage. Before attempting to cram items unsafely into the space you have or allowing frustration to set in, you may want to consult a garage building professional to determine whether you can add some new storage solutions. A garage renovation may allow you safely store tools and appliances and make the best use of your space.

Prepare Your Walls and Ceilings

Since tools can be rather expensive, you will want to take extra precautions to ensure that they will last a long time. To avoid external damage, tool racks and wall brackets can be installed. Bigger items such as shovels, weed whackers, chain saws, and lawnmowers can hang from the rafters or be placed on the walls. In addition, smaller tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, and wrenches can be organized on a mounted tool wall.

Considering the bitter cold that comes with an Illinois winter, your garage’s temperature may need to be addressed. Wet weather and poor air conditions can cause damage to power tools and lead to rust forming on metal appliances. Although a portable heating device can be purchased, it is not safe to leave one constantly running in your garage. Adding insulation to your garage walls, door, and ceiling can help maintain the proper temperature.

Increase Your Storage Space

If wall and ceiling storage cannot fulfill your storage needs, different types of garage expansions could be the answer. Adding an extra storage room to your garage can provide an area for tools and appliances to be kept. Furthermore, a garage loft can grant additional storage space for items that cannot hang on a wall. Work benches, large toolboxes, and oddly shaped appliances can greatly benefit from these types of garage construction projects. Before beginning a renovation project, it is important to ensure that your planned structure will meet your local zoning requirements.

How Can I Prepare My Garage for an Illinois Winter?

November 20, 2019/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Elements such as wind, ice, snow, sleet, and hail can make wintertime in the Midwest a frightful thing to experience. Although garages are exposed to the weather year-round, these structures often do not receive the same amount of maintenance and care that a house would get. Due to the frigid temperatures that occur during the winter months, garages may often be covered in snow or ice. In an effort to avoid any injuries or property damage, agarage renovation project may be needed. Discussing your thoughts and concerns with a knowledgeable garage improvement expert can save you a great deal of time, effort, and money in this type of project.

Addressing Snow and Ice Accumulation

During the winter, it is common for snow and ice to build up on garage roofs. Massive amounts of snow can sit atop a garage, leading to leakage, holes, or even cave-ins. Although it may seem that a little snow on a garage roof can provide an extra layer of insulation, allowing snow to pile up is not recommended due to the possible harm that can result. If the snow begins to melt, extensive water damage may result. Furthermore, snow that turns into ice can lead to icicles and additional safety hazards.

The temperature of your garage roof can lead to additional issues. When snow comes into contact with a warm roof, it can melt and refreeze. Because water expands when it freezes, this can lead to additional damage. You can help avoid this by ensuring that you have proper insulation in your garage’s attic, which will keep the inside of your garage warm while also keeping the outside cold. Furthermore, you should ensure that your gutters are up to code. When snow melts into water, having proper working gutters can prevent further destruction.

Prepare for External Damage

Depending on the structure, build, and external doors that a garage may have, different types of weather conditions may cause external damage. For instance, a garage’s siding may be torn off due to strong winds, or dents and holes can result from hail. Before storms start to approach, you may want to have your garage doors and siding inspected. You can also seal any gaps around doors and windows, which can help keep the structure sound.

What Are the Benefits of a Radiant Heating System in Your Garage?

November 13, 2019/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

As wintertime weather begins to approach the Chicagoland area, homeowners may be looking for ways to keep their garages warm. Options such as insulation and portable space heaters are relatively simple solutions that can help at times; however, they might not be the most ideal solution. If you plan on using your garage throughout these cold months, installing a radiant heating system may be your best option. Before rushing into a major garage renovation project, you should consult an experienced garage professional.

What Is a Radiant Heating System?

Unlike a space heater, a radiant heating system will supply heat to wherever the system is installed. For example, if the system is installed under the floor, heat will be transferred throughout the entire ground. The heat will be evenly delivered throughout the area of installation. Simply put, radiant heating involves the installation of a heat source behind or underneath a surface.

Different Types of Radiant Floor Heating Systems

Radiant floor heating can provide a more balanced temperature level throughout your entire garage. Relying on convection, heat will rise from your floor and distribute evenly. If you choose to move forward with a radiant heat floor system, you will have two different options to choose from:

  • Electric Radiant Floors: Electric coils are installed underneath the floor to produce heat.
  • Hydronic Radiant Floors: The more cost-effective option, these systems pump heated water through tubing laid under the floor.

Installation of a Radiant Floor Heating System

Either a wet or a dry installation method will be used to install an electric or hydronic radiant heating system in your garage floor. Each method has its own benefits:

  • Wet installations involve placing either the cable or tube into concrete. This process both protects the material and provides a thermal mass to absorb heat.
  • Dry installations utilize prebuilt panels that have tracks for the radiant tubing within their design. This makes it easy for installers to loop the tubes as needed before covering the panels with flooring material.

Advantages of a Radiant Heating System

Installing a radiant heating system to your garage can be one of the more efficient ways to fight against the cold. In addition to high quality heating, a radiant heating system:

  • Is energy efficient
  • Requires low operating costs after installation
  • Produces little to no noise
  • Will not take up any room
  • Can improve air quality

Can I Remodel My Garage During the Winter?

November 6, 2019/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

If you are looking to improve or redevelop your garage, it is important to consider what time of year the project should begin. Although winter may seem like a less than ideal time to start a garage makeover, completing renovations during the colder season will ensure that the finished product will be ready when the warmer months roll around. If you want to enjoy your garage when the weather is nice, a winter remodel may be ideal for you. Before jumping into a garage renovation, it is important to discuss your wants and needs with an experienced garage building expert.

Why Are Colder Months Good for Renovation?

Depending on what type of remodel you are looking to do, the colder temperature of wintertime can make construction easier. If the ground is frozen, and the air is dry, it will be more ideal to dig a foundation. In addition, it is practical to avoid a muddy ground if you are pouring concrete. One final thought to consider if you start a project in the winter months is that you can avoid the unpredictable weather of the spring and summer months.

Benefits of a Wintertime Renovation

Garages are often used more frequently in the spring and summer than during the months of November through February. When the weather gets frightful, many people like to stay inside their home rather than utilize tools or other equipment that may be stored in a garage. If your renovation project is completed out of season, your garage can be the ideal summertime location for:

  • Cookouts and parties
  • A work area for cars and other projects
  • A location to store lawn tools, pool equipment, and sporting items

Make Room for Your Car and Winter Items

Before you begin a garage renovation in the winter, it is important to consider how your everyday life may be affected. If possible, you should try to maintain enough room for your car in the garage throughout the renovation. By clearing out space, utilizing efficient storage methods, and understanding your construction needs, you can ensure that you will be able to park your car inside the garage during winter weather. Furthermore, you will want to ensure that you will have access to snow shovels, salt, or other items needed to clear snow or ice, since construction may be tricky if safety concerns are not addressed.

If you are thinking about customizing your garage, the winter months may be the best season to start your project. Since a garage is typically under-utilized when it is cold out, you can prepare for a time when you will be able to enjoy your garage more fully. If you have any questions or concerns about your garage, or if you need help determining how to implement your garage renovation ideas, Blue Sky Builders, Inc. can provide insight into your specific needs. What You Should Consider When Planning a Garage Expansion

October 23, 2019/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

The number of cars in the United States has continued to grow throughout the past several decades, and the average size of vehicles has also expanded. Travel has become more and more of a necessity in today’s society, and many families now have multiple cars. In the past, a two-car garage provided plenty of room, but nowadays, that may no longer be enough. With winter approaching relatively quickly, the addition of more room in your garage could be the garage renovation project your family needs. However, you will need to keep a few things in mind when considering this type of custom garage project.

Know Your County Limits

In DuPage County, a single-family home on a lot of 40,000 square feet or less is allowed a maximum size of 650 feet for a detached garage. However, if there is no current detached garage built, the homeowner is provided with an additional 200 square feet. In all single-family residential zones for homes that have 40,000 square feet of property or less, the maximum height allowed for a detached garage is 15 feet.

If your property expands past 40,000 square feet, a detached garage would be in proportion to the amount of land you have. DuPage County allows a garage to be the size of the land multiplied by.01625. The same guidelines apply regarding the additional 200 square feet if there is not a structure already in place. The maximum height allowed for a detached garage on this size property is 24 feet. It should also be noted that a garage cannot exceed a total of 2,600 square feet.

Why Else Could an Expanded Garage Be Beneficial?

Although cars can take up an excessive amount of space, they are not the only items that can be stored in a garage. With the warmer weather starting to disappear, our garages will become the home of many summertime items. Lawn equipment, pool supplies, toys, and sporting equipment can all require significant space in an already crowded garage. Furthermore, items such as shovels, snowblowers, and ice melt will need to be easily accessible during the winter months. A garage expansion would be able to provide additional room, making your life much easier.

Contact Our DuPage County Garage Renovation Experts

Depending on the size of your land, pre-existing structures, and reasons for wanting an expanded garage, a lot of options may be available. Although it might seem like a straightforward project, other renovations may be required. Removing an existing structure, installing new concrete, and building the expansion can be a considerable amount of work. The professionals at Blue Sky Builders, Inc. will work with you to help you understand your options and determine the best way to proceed. How Can I Childproof My Garage?

October 16, 2019/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

The safety and well-being of children are likely to be the primary concerns of any parent or guardian. Whether you already have a child or may be a parent soon, taking the time to childproof your home can be important. However, one area that many parents may overlook is the garage. Items that are often stored in a garage, such as tools, machinery, cars, chemicals, and appliances can be very dangerous. If you are considering a garage renovation project, you should talk to an experienced garage professional to ensure that any safety concerns are addressed.

Assessing Your Garage

What may seem safe to an adult can pose an inherent risk to a young child. It is important to look through your garage and take note of any safety issues that may be prevalent or issues that might be outside the norm. When trying to determine what could be dangerous, these questions may help narrow things down:

  • Can my child reach this?
  • Can this be opened by a child?
  • Can my child get inside the garage without me?
  • Are my garage entry points in good condition?
  • Is it okay to keep trash in my garage?

Taking Steps to Childproof Your Garage

Many potential dangers that exist within a garage can be corrected by some rather simple renovations. For example, to keep chemicals and tools out of the reach of children, installing high shelves or cabinets with locks could significantly decrease a child’s ability to access them. Furthermore, the addition of a separate room with a locking door could prohibit a child from accessing items such as rakes, shovels, lawnmowers, and weed whackers.

Structural Concerns

Trash may seem like an unimportant topic of concern in regard to a child’s safety; however, pests and wildlife could be attracted to garbage in your garage. If the garage has a broken window, a loose entry door, or any other exterior damage that can provide an entryway, animals can burrow into a garage, and they may bite or attack someone if they are cornered.

The possibility of a fire must also be considered when addressing any safety issues. Electrical surges, flammable liquids, and other incendiary items can lead to a fire starting and spreading rather quickly. It can be beneficial to install smoke detectors, purchase a fire extinguisher, and regularly check the functionality of your garage door and other hardware. A malfunctioning device can create sparks and friction, and resulting fires could spread to flammable objects such as a car.

Contact Our DuPage County Garage Renovation Experts

Maintaining a structurally sound garage is one of the most important ways to keep your property safe for children. Furthermore, the addition of strategically placed cabinets and inaccessible storage rooms could limit children from getting their hands on unsafe items. What Flooring Concerns Should be Addressed Before Remodeling a Garage?

October 9, 2019/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

One of the most interesting aspects of a garage is the multi-purpose functionality that it can provide. Nowadays, almost anything can be added to a garage; living units, home offices, man caves, and home gyms are replacing what used to be considered an uninhabited area. Garage customization projects can sometimes require significant changes to garage space, but before moving forward with a major renovation, one area that must be addressed is the floor. Depending on the purpose you would like your garage to serve, you will want to be sure the style of flooring meets your needs. Consulting a garage building professional could provide insight on what options should be considered.

Plan for Repairs and Restoration

Whether you are planning to add a new surface to your garage floor or wish to keep your current floor in place, it is important to address any pre-existing damages. Years of wear and tear in a garage can result in cement flooring being damaged. Areas of concern such as cracks, holes, uneven surfaces, or grease and oil stains should be addressed before any renovations begin. Although some aspects of the restoration process can be addressed quite easily, others may require the assistance of a professional.

Adding Insulation

For garages that are going to be converted into an area used by people on a regular basis, the aspect of comfort should be taken into consideration. Illinois residents can experience many weather changes, so the insulation used in your garage floor will ensure that you can be comfortable at a variety of different temperatures. An insulated concrete slab can help keep a garage warmer and more energy efficient. Insulation can be installed either above or below the concrete slab, although sometimes it may not be possible to go underneath. In many cases, a favorable garage environment can be achieved by adding insulation on top of the slab.

Choosing the Right Style

After safety concerns are addressed and insulation is added, the aspect of design comes into consideration. Whether you plan to use paint, epoxy, tiles, or any other flooring options, it is important to choose a style that fits your remodel. Additionally, the flooring type that is chosen should be able to withstand the rigors that a garage floor can be subjected to. Aspects such as waterproofing, ease of cleaning, durability, and flexibility should all be taken into consideration. The use of rugs, rubber mats, or additional floor accessories may provide extra flair to your renovation.
