Top Five Ways to Keep Your Garage Cool

June 28, 2017/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Whether you are planning on completing your latest project or just trying to sit back and relax, keeping the inside of your garage cool can prove to be a challenge during the hot summer months. Listed below are our top five ways to keep your garage cool when the weather turns hot.

1. Insulate your garage. Unlike the other walls in your home, your garage door was not designed with climate control in mind. No amount of air conditioning will cool your garage if the door exposes it to the outside heat. Whether you use form, wood, or tape, a well-insulated garage door will cool your garage and cut your energy bill.

2. Install an air conditioning unit. Ranging from $150 to more than $500, window and/or wall-mounted air conditioning units are a reasonable way to cool your garage. Whether you have one professionally installed or you choose to do it yourself, an AC unit will surely cool you off while you tackle your latest project.

3. Install a fan. With a variety of options to choose from, installing a fan in your garage is one of the easiest ways to cool off your favorite work space. Most hardware stores offer basic box fans for under $50 (with premium options available). Ceiling fans can be installed on a single weekend afternoon and typically cost just over $100. Both options are likely to suit the needs of your garage.

4. Paint your garage door a light color. A simple way to beat the heat is to make sure you are not absorbing it. While you may prefer to stand out from the crowd with a distinctly painted garage door, a light-colored coat of paint could be instrumental in keeping you cool.

5. Create an airflow through your garage. If you are looking for a low-effort solution, our best recommendation would be to create an airflow in your garage. By slightly cracking open the bottom of your garage door, you can create a tunnel of wind that will temporarily turn your garage into a breezy tropical beach.

The Best Paint to Use for Your Garage

June 21, 2017/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

If you spend a lot of time in your garage, the environment you create in that space is important. One key decision you will have to make when decorating your garage is what kind of paint is best for you to use on the walls. There are many different types of paint that you can use on the walls of your garage. Some are more specialized, while others are just simply used for design purposes.

Specialized paints
There are certain types of paint that serve a specific purpose. For example, a semi-gloss paint helps prevent dirt particles from showing and makes it easier to wipe down the walls without showing any damage. If you wish to keep your garage clean, you may want to choose a washable paint so that you do not have to worry about overall wear when you wash the walls of your garage.

Anti-mold paint
Before purchasing anti-mold paint, ask yourself if you can paint over mold if you use mold resistant paint. Although it is ultimately up to you, it is not recommended to paint over mold, even if it is with anti-mold paint. That specific type of paint will resist the development of mold if applied to a mold-free surface, but it will not fully eliminate mold already on the surface. Painting over existing mold can actually make it more difficult to see when that mold begins to grow and spread. As long as you apply this paint first before the mold is forming, you should be in the clear. Zinsser is one brand that produces a type of anti-mold paint. The paint is a mold killing primer that can be used to eliminate mold, mildew, moss, fungi, and odor-causing bacteria.

Light-colored paint
When choosing the paint color for your garage, you may want to think about what kind of activities you wish to do in your garage. For example, if you use your garage for mostly work, try considering a light color. Lighter shades reflect the most sunlight, which will keep the garage cool and comfortable to be in when you are trying to get work done. If you spend a good amount of time in your garage, whether you work in it or not, you still may want to paint the walls a lighter shade to reduce the temperature in the garage.

Darker colors cover dirt
Keep in mind that not every light color is going to suit the overall decor of your garage. Some garages tend to get dirtier than others. If this is the case for you, you may want to paint your walls a darker color so dirt does not appear. Avoid whites and yellow shades-choose a gray or brown instead.

5 Organizational Techniques for Garage Equipment

June 14, 2017/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

As the seasons change, the way that you organize your garage may change as well. When the weather becomes warmer in the summertime, you might choose to pack away your winter gear and switch it for outdoor equipment such as bikes, sprinklers, and gardening tools. You will want to organize this equipment in your garage so you can find materials easily. There are a few key steps to take when it comes to executing organizational techniques for your garage equipment:

Before you begin, take everything out
Look at your garage when it is empty. Looking at a bare garage is like an artist staring at their blank canvas before they begin painting their masterpiece. By emptying your garage, you can decide which areas of your garage are best to designate for certain storage space. Once you have a clear idea of how you wish to set up your space, you can begin the next steps of organizing.

Make the most of the space you have
This is a particularly important step to keep in mind if you own a car or multiple cars because they may take up a good amount of space-leaving less room for other storage items. Purchasing vertical shelving units and making the most of your vertical space can go a long way when it comes time to condensing storage space in your garage.

Take time to label everything
Labeling all of your equipment is key in keeping everything in the right place and stored neatly. In the long run, it will pay off to take the time to sort each item by type and label your storage containers and shelves.

Create a designated area for each season
As stated previously, you will want to store away any equipment that you will not be using during the summer. You can store any snow shovels, salt for ice, or other winter items at the back or corners of your garage. Think about what you want your garage to be used for and the best way each area can be divided.

Conduct an annual clean out
Think about what you wish to keep, what you want to donate, and what you can throw away. When you find yourself wondering if you should throw away a particular item, ask yourself if you need it or have used it recently. If the answer to these questions is “no,” then toss it.

If you need assistance with organizing your garage, please contact our garage experts at Blue Sky Builders, Inc. today. For more information and tips on techniques for sorting out your garage equipment call us at 630-852-8485.

How to Eliminate Garage Damage Caused by Humidity

June 7, 2017/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

A drastic change in climate can take a toll on the interior of your garage. It is common for moisture, caused by rain or humidity, to get trapped within the walls of your garage and cause damage. This should not be taken lightly, and if it is ignored, the excess moisture in your garage can become worse over time. However, there are a few steps you can take in order to eliminate garage damage caused by rain and humidity.

Monitor the temperature inside your garage space
This is a simple way to control the level of condensation that builds up in your garage over time. Using a garage heater during the cooler months of the year will help keep the temperature balanced, which means it will be less humid in your garage. Install an air conditioning unit in your garage to help evaporate any excess moisture. An alternative to an AC unit is a dehumidifier. It is important to remember to empty out any water that the dehumidifier collects-as it will best function that way.

Double check your ventilation system
Providing enough ventilation in your garage is one of the most beneficial ways to reduce humidity. Also, you should keep in mind that this method is cost-effective as well. The first step to proper ventilation is to keep doors and windows open as much as you can in order to release any trapped moisture. You may also want to place a fan in your garage, if one is not built in, to blow some excess dampness outside. A successful ventilation process helps keep a good balance between the airflow outside and inside your home.

Keep your car dry when parking in your garage
This step of the process might not seem like a big deal, but in fact, a car covered in moisture can cause your garage to become more humid. Condensation can form due to melted snow or rain that is left on your car. Consider taking a moment to dry off your vehicle in order to reduce any excess moisture.

If you have any moisture forming in your garage that may cause issues down the road, please contact our garage experts at Blue Sky Builders, Inc. today. For more information on how to eliminate the garage damage caused by humidity or inclement weather. Call us at 630-852-8485.

Security Tips That Can Keep Your Garage Safe

May 24, 2017/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

It is important to keep your garage in mind when you are installing a home security system. Before you finalize your decision on which locks to buy or what type of motion detectors to place on your lawn, make sure to review these tips that can keep your garage safe and secure from thieves and animals.

Install a security system
One of the most common ways that people choose to protect themselves is by implementing a security system in their garage. If someone were to try to break into your garage, the system will be set off and an alarm will alert emergency services. There are many different types of security systems, so it may be beneficial to do some research before purchasing one for your home.

Seal all windows
If your garage has windows, keep them covered with blinds or curtains so that no one can see in. The more exposed that your garage is, the more likely it is that someone will look inside and steal your property.

Install motion detector lighting
Something as easy as updating your current light fixtures in front of your house can add an extra layer of protection. Installing motion detector lights can improve security because these lights are equipped with infrared waves that detect the body temperature of moving objects. Warm objects, such as animals or people, will be detected by the sensors. When this occurs, a red light turns on and stays on for a short amount of time.

Secure the doors leading to the garage with locks
Burglars can access your garage by sneaking through the garage door. They can also break into your garage by entering your home and then going through the door that connects your garage to the rest of the house. This is a good time to double check that all doors connecting your house to the garage are securely locked. You can use protection such as deadbolts and padlocks that are programmed with an entry code. You can install doors that are made with heavy-duty material such as fiberglass, solid wood, or metal.

Remove the garage door opener remote from your car
Try to avoid giving a burglar easy access to your home. If you leave your garage door opener remote in your car, and you leave your car in the driveway, your remote is out in the open for anyone to come by and snatch it. A good alternative is to purchase a keychain remote to replace your larger garage remote so you can bring it with on the go.

Avoid These Garage Cleaning Mistakes

May 17, 2017/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

While you may be aware of the correct steps to take when it comes to cleaning your garage, the mistakes that you should avoid may not be as clear. There are a number of steps to stay away from when you are thinking about cleaning your garage.

Clean without a plan in place
In order to successfully execute the process of cleaning your garage, it is important to come up with a few ideas of how you wish to go about it. This can make the steps that follow less stressful and easier to complete. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is to add more time and confusion to the overall organization process. If you do not first take the time to put a plan in place, you may feel overwhelmed and end up rushing your cleanup.

Dress in nice clothes or uncomfortable shoes
Chances are that you are going to get a little dirty when it comes time to clean your garage. With that being said, it would be wise not to wear nice dress clothes because dirt and dust can potentially get all over your outfit. Instead, it might be a good idea to wear an older T-shirt and a comfortable pair of gym shoes, so that you are able to move around more effectively.

Set your expectations too high
It is easy to get carried away when you are in the process of tidying up your garage space. However, it is important to remember to take it slow and not rush it. It could be beneficial to prioritize a few tasks that can be completed in a day’s time. If you know that cleaning your garage is going to take longer than just a few hours, try to spread out your work over a week-focusing on one project per day for a couple of hours.

Use the wrong household cleaners
While household cleaners are powerful and effective, there are a number of reasons as to why you should not use them for cleaning your garage. Do not rush to grab the first cleaning item you find in your laundry room and start using it. Instead, take a little time to make sure that you are reading the directions of each product carefully. Follow the given instructions to properly throw away cleaners or chemicals once you are done using them.

How to Keep Your Garage Cool During Hot Weather

May 10, 2017/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

The temperature during summertime in Chicago can get hot enough to make the interior of your garage uncomfortable to be in. It is beneficial to be proactive during the spring by updating your garage to prepare it for the oncoming hot weather. There are a handful of steps you can take in order to protect your garage from the summer heat.

Maintain constant air circulation
It is important to try to remove all of the hot air out of your garage. One way to do this is by opening the garage door itself or by leaving the garage windows open for a few hours. Once most of the hot air is gone, you can then begin creating a constant circulation of cool air. If you want to spend a little extra cash, another option is to install an exhaust fan in the garage ceiling. Circulating the air with a fan will be useful for creating a consistent air flow.

Paint the exterior of your garage light colors
Dark shades attract the sunlight and may cause the interior of your garage to heat up quickly. By painting your garage a lighter color, you will allow the sunlight to reflect off the garage’s walls. So, choosing a shade such as white or cream is one way to decrease the temperature in your garage.

Insulate, caulk and weather strip
Weatherproofing your garage is not only key in keeping the heat out, it will also provide the warmth you need to stay inside your garage during the winter. So, applying insulation is a win-win situation. In addition, make sure to inspect the edges and corners of your garage thoroughly so that you do not miss any cracks. Once that is complete, you can fix any opening with caulking and weather stripping. The next step is to install insulation around the doors and windows. You can even place insulation on the walls and ceiling to maintain a comfortable temperature in your garage.

Plant trees strategically
An all-natural way to block the sun from beaming down on your garage roof is to plant trees in just the right places outside the front of your house. This can reduce the sun’s impact and create a comfortable, shaded area during those peak sunlight hours.

Install a mini AC unit in your walls
There is a small air conditioning unit called a “mini-split” that gets its name from being spilt into an inside and outside unit. These AC units can be effective in cooling a specific area as they are small in size and do not produce much noise.

5 Ways to Prep your Garage for the Summer

May 2, 2017/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

The weather in Chicago can be unpredictable and change drastically from season to season. Keeping that in mind, it may be beneficial to take precautions and make sure that your garage is ready for summer weather. There are many steps that you can take in order to prep your garage for the upcoming temperature change.

Clean up and organize your space
The items that you have out and ready to use during the winter months are most likely not the same ones that you need for the summer. For example, you might store your bikes away during the colder seasons and bring them back out when the weather gets a little warmer. The organization of your garage may vary for the same reason. An important first step in preparing your garage for summer is to clean your space, making sure that everything you want to use has been moved to an accessible location and is ready for use.

Inspect the mechanics for functionality
You can get as specific as you would like, depending on how much time you wish to spend on the mechanics of your garage. Since it also pertains to your garage’s safety, this may be one of the most important items on your summer garage prep checklist. There are many moving parts that go into your garage, so you want to make sure that everything is functioning and that you test out the mechanisms.

Perform safety checks
When the weather gets warmer, it is more likely that your neighbors, family, or friends will come over and spend time in your garage area. Therefore, completing a routine safety check to make sure that all aspects of your garage are functioning properly is an essential step in preparing your garage for the summer. Your safety check will include wiping down all objects so that there is no dust or dirt that can be touched, making sure that your AC units contain clean filters, or even just making sure that you have a safe place for all of your gardening tools.

Paint or clean the garage door
Not only will this check off the next step, but painting your garage can symbolize starting fresh with the new season. A fresh coat of paint has the ability to brighten up your garage and protect it from the harsh elements that have the potential to cause damage in the long run.

Weather stripping and insulation
While you are enjoying the warm weather, keep in mind that before you know it, the cold will be back. Take advantage of being able to work outdoors by applying new weather stripping and insulating your garage. For the weather stripping, it is important to make sure that all cracks are properly filled. For the insulation, it not only keeps the cold air out, but it can also be helpful when keeping your garage dry and humidity away.

Garage Landscaping Ideas

April 26, 2017/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Maintaining the landscaping around your garage is key to boosting curbside appeal for your home. There are plenty of ways to create the outdoor look that suits your taste. Adding plants, flowers, or other outdoor elements all have the potential to beautify your garage’s exterior.

Grow plants that absorb moisture
The area outside of your garage is not limited to having colorful flowers. Growing plants that are multipurpose, such as ones that absorb moisture and keep bugs away, make for pleasant porch time. Some examples of natural mosquito-repelling plants include citronellas, horsemints, marigolds, ageratums, and catnips.

Avoid plants with berries
While some bushes or trees with berries may be attractive because of their colorful nature, berries can attract bugs to the front of your home. If you do decide to include berry trees or bushes, plant them further away from your garage door so that your guests are not bothered by bugs when they come over to visit.

Give yourself enough space
If you do not want to cover your whole garage door with landscaping, choose a different focal point before implementing your design. If you paint your garage door a bright color, it is likely the first thing that people will notice upon seeing your home. However, if you want your plants to be what visitors notice first, you can place some vibrant greenery outside instead. That will add variety to your home’s style.

Stick to what you know
Do you not have a green thumb? That’s okay. There is no need to give up hope on your garage landscaping ideas. An alternative to planting is the placement of rocks in your front yard. This is a type of next-to-no-maintenance landscaping that still allows you to be creative. From shrubs to rocks to colorful paint choices, there are plenty of decor options from which to choose.

Our garage specialists are happy to provide assistance to our clients with their garage maintenance needs. Contact our garage experts at Blue Sky Builders, Inc. today for assistance with drafting garage landscaping ideas for your home. Call us at 630-852-8485 for more information.

5 Steps to Follow When Cleaning Aluminum Siding

April 19, 2017/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Spring is the perfect time of year for outdoor cleaning. You may consider cleaning your aluminum siding or garage door when it comes to freshening up your home. The task of trying to make aluminum look brand new can be simple if you follow these five steps. For those unfamiliar with the topic, aluminum is a tough material that is used for siding or garage doors. One benefit of purchasing aluminum for your home is that it requires very little to no maintenance. However, this minimum amount of maintenance still needs to be done in order to keep a long lifespan for your siding.

Prepare your proper cleaning equipment
Before you start cleaning, be sure to obtain the appropriate cleaning supplies. The first cleaner that you’ll use is laundry detergent containing bleach as one of its ingredients. If mildew has formed on the siding, the bleach will help remove it over time. The second cleaning item that you’ll need is a high-pressure water hose. This supply will be further explained in the next step. Other recommended cleaning items include a brush for deep crevices, protective eyewear, a hat, and a jacket in case you are cleaning your garage siding in chilly weather. If you can, be sure to choose a pleasant day to work outdoors, as the task may take some time.

Pressure wash if necessary
If you decide to use a pressure washer, be mindful of its forcefulness. Use a low setting to avoid any damage to your siding, which can result from water passing through to the underside. Spraying the water at an angle is recommended so that the chances of water leaking through any gaps is limited.

Rinse the siding before applying cleaning solutions
By doing so beforehand, you can increase the chances of a better result when it comes to scrubbing and cleaning. Once you scrub the surface, it is important to rinse the siding before the solution dries out and leaves marks.

Minimize any mildew
Bleach is one of the most helpful cleaning supplies when it comes to getting rid of mildew on your aluminum siding. Also, consider vinegar, as it is an eco-friendly alternative for cleaning. If you are not sure if the buildup on your siding is mildew or dirt, just apply a small amount of bleach on the surface’s area. If it remains a dark color, it is dirt. However, if the color gets lighter, then it is mildew.

Work from top to bottom
When cleaning your garage or siding, start from the top. Use a soft brush so that you do not leave any marks. Rinse the areas that you clean immediately after you scrub them, then move downwards.
