How to “Winterize” Your Garage

November 15, 2017/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Winter is coming, and now is the perfect time to get ready for the cold months. In the Chicago area and DuPage County, the weather can abruptly change, and temperatures can vary wildly from day to day. Because of these frequent changes, anything can happen in your garage during the winter months. Here are some ways to prepare your garage for winter so that it will still be in working order by spring:

Get Rid of Mice in Your Garage

During the winter, mice tend to seek shelter inside houses and garages, often entering through holes in the home that have not been covered. If mice get into your garage, there is cause for concern. They can cause serious health problems, as they are very unsanitary. Fortunately, there are several ways to keep mice away from your garage this winter:

  • Spread mousetraps by the walls of your garage or near a suspected access point, using cheese or peanut butter as bait.
  • Spray mouse repellant around the outside of your garage.
  • If you do not want to use chemicals to keep mice at bay, you can mix one fourth of a cup of laundry detergent and one tablespoon of hot pepper sauce in one gallon of water, then spray this mixture around the outside of the garage.
  • Use compound or wood caulk to cover up any holes. This will keep mice from entering your house.
  • If you would like to help preserve the environment, you can use ultrasonic mouse repelling devices inside your garage. Humans cannot hear the sound that these repellers make, but the sound is painful to mice, keeping them away from the area where the sound is produced.

Throw Away Any Gasoline

It is not a good idea to keep gasoline in your garage. If you do have some containers containing gas, it is important to know the following facts about the risks of gas explosion:

  • A very low volume of gasoline inside a container presents a higher risk for explosion;
  • Low temperatures also produce higher explosion risks; and
  • Aged gasoline is a massive risk.

An explosion can occur when gas vapor from the can comes in contact with a source of ignition, such as a spark or a flame. The flame travels back into the can through the spout, and the mixture of gas and air inside the can may ignite and explode.

Heating and Insulating Your Garage

Heating your garage with a forced-air garage heater or an infrared tube heater will allow you to continue using this space during the cold winter months. However, it is important to make sure your garage walls and ceiling are insulated; otherwise, you will be wasting energy and money.

Many forced-air unit heaters cost around $600, and infrared tube heaters cost around $1,000. Infrared tube heaters typically cost less to run, so they may result in greater savings over time. Infrared heaters should be installed at least seven feet above the garage floor and hang down at least four inches from the ceiling. All objects should be at least three feet away from the heater to reduce the risk of causing a garage fire.

The installation details for forced-air heaters are not as specific as they are for infrared tube heaters. Forced-air heaters are typically placed in the corner of the garage, close to an electrical outlet and gas line. Depending on the unit, there may need to be a certain amount of space between the heater and the garage’s walls and ceiling.

Garage Repair Vs. Garage Renovation: Weighing the Costs and Benefits

November 9, 2017/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

It is almost the end of the year, and most of us are making huge plans for the holidays. What many of us have not considered is how we should go about making garage repairs for the upcoming season. There are many factors which can determine whether you may need some quick repairs on your garage, or if you need complete renovations. Weather, which can change abruptly in the Chicago area and DuPage County, can be a factor in that determination, as well as changing storage needs, and the addition of new drivers to the household.

Why Is it Better to Get a Quote for a Garage Repair Now?

Since garage repairs are typically done in the spring, it is best to get a quote for your garage in the fall or winter. This way, you will have an idea of how much a garage repair will cost, and you will have an opportunity to save for such repairs. If your garage needs a few simple repairs, then it is best to decide what needs to be fixed. However, if there are major problems with your garage, then rebuilding might be the best option.

Cost of Garage Repairs vs. a New Garage

Renovating or rebuilding your garage is a major project. When looking at the costs of either decision, here are a few factors that should be considered:

  • How long do you plan to stay in your home?
  • Do you need more space in your garage for more drivers?
  • Do you plan on creating more living space in or above your garage?

You need to have an idea of how long you are planning to stay in your current home before considering garage renovations. If you are planning to rebuild your garage, you may be spending as much as $50,000 on the project, with only a $30,000 increase in property value. The national average of building an attached one to two-car garage is between $7,500 and $27,040 on the entire project. If your plan is to stay in the home for only five more years, then you will be paying at least $4,000 per year, and you will need to decide if that investment is worth it.

If you only need small repairs on your garage, then it may be best to just stick with those projects. Here are a few easy fixes which will likely not cost you a lot of money:

  • A new garage door spring typically costs between $50 and $100 per spring, and the total cost of replacing a broken garage door spring is usually $200 to $300.
  • Replacing a broken garage door cable will cost between $150 and $200 per cable, and the installation can take some time.
  • Repairs on a bent garage door track may cost between $125 and $150 if you cannot knock the track back into shape on your own.
  • Safety sensors will cost $50 to $75 if you cannot realign them by yourself.
  • A garage door can cost between $200 per door to $4,000 for two doors. On average, homeowners spend over $1,000 on door replacement and installation.

Storage Needs

If you are planning to rebuild your garage, then you will need to determine the dimensions of your space. Depending on how many cars you will have, your garage will need to be wide enough to open your car doors and walk around toward the interior of your home. The biggest challenge of garage renovation often comes from adding more drivers and cars to a household, depending on the size of each car.

How Can a Garage Add Value to the Home?

The longer you live in your home, the more you will want to consider your future needs. If you have a garage, then adding to available storage space will attract potential home buyers. Garages also preserve the value of important possessions, such as cars and other storage items. If properly maintained, garages can protect these important possessions from various losses, such as:

  • Vandalism;
  • Storm damage;
  • Break-ins;
  • Theft; and
  • Hit-and-run accidents.

Sharing Thanksgiving Kindness Out of Your Garage

November 1, 2017/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Today is November 1st, and Thanksgiving is just around the corner. Families throughout the Chicago area and DuPage County are planning their get-togethers with extended family, and Thanksgiving meals are being planned. Even though most families have some plans on Thursday, November 23rd, there are some people who cannot afford a Thanksgiving dinner. For many years, communities and organizations have come together to help those in need have a better Thanksgiving experience. These groups raise money to provide Thanksgiving meals, as well as shelter and meals for the future. In order to raise money for Thanksgiving dinners for those in need, some families have even gone above and beyond to convert their garage into a charity event.

Garage Sales for a Cause

You can always convert your garage into a place to sell your unwanted items, and it is up to you to decide how you want to allocate your earnings from a garage sale. Since Thanksgiving is coming up, you may want to consider donating the money made from a garage sale to a charity to help others in need. You can also send a message on social media to extended family and friends and ask them what they would like to donate to the charity garage sale. If you get most of your family and friends to join you, then you will have plenty of items to sell and potentially make more money for the charity of your choice.

What Should Go Into a Charity Garage Sale

If you have some old clothes that you do not wear anymore, then you can sell those items to make money for your charity. Since it is already the beginning of November, many people are also starting to think about their holiday shopping, and it might be a good idea to sell the Christmas and holiday decorations that you do not use anymore. You can also consider adding the following to your charity garage sale:

  • Flower arrangements;
  • Books;
  • CDs and music albums;
  • Toys and games;
  • Jewelry;
  • Furniture and bedding; and
  • Kitchen appliances.

What to Do if Everything Is Not Sold?

While you may sell most of the items in your garage sale, it is likely that some unsold items will be left over. Whatever you do not sell can be donated to the cause you are raising money for or another local charity. A few other suggestions include:

  • Setting up another charity garage sale in the future;
  • Considering bulk sales of unsold clothes; and
  • Selling your unsold electronics to recycling companies.

Thanksgiving is meant to be a holiday that brings people together for good food and good laughs. It is always important to help others have a good Thanksgiving as well. Hosting a charity event can take place anywhere. If you have enough space in your garage, then that is one of the best places to host such an event. Located in Downers Grove, Illinois, Blue Sky Builders, Inc. has over 38 years of experience in the garage sector, and will always go above and beyond to service your garage needs. How to Get Opossums Out of Your Garage Before Winter

October 25, 2017/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

To some people, opossums can be among the cutest creatures in the whole world. To others, an opossum’s long face is enough to scare them away. No matter what you may think of opossums, they can wreak havoc on your garage, especially in the winter. To have peace of mind during this bitter cold season in the Chicago area and the DuPage County suburbs, it is best to follow some precautions so that you do not have to deal with the challenges that come with harboring furry creatures in your garage.

By the way, “opossum” is the correct spelling when referring to the North American marsupial, but many people refer to them as “possums” or use the two terms interchangeably. We will use “opossum” for the purposes of this blog.

How Can Opossums Destroy Your Garage?

Opossums can make frequent visits to a homeowner’s garden, compost piles, garbage bins, and food dishes for dogs and/or cats. If there is an opening in the home that has gone undetected, then an opossum can make its way into the home to search for food or to find shelter.

Opossums often leave droppings and excretions on solid ground, potentially causing some serious damage to your garage. If they bring leftover food from your compost pile into your garage, then the food will rot. The excretions from the opossum will often attract parasites and can cause bacteria to form inside the garage, causing damage to the interior of the garage and any property inside.

How Can Opossums Make You Sick?

Even though opossums almost never carry rabies, they can carry other diseases, including tuberculosis, Chagas Disease, salmonella, and tularemia, to name a few. These diseases can be extremely serious if not controlled immediately. Opossums also often carry fleas, mites, and lice, which can be transmitted to people in the house.

How to Keep Opossums Out of Your Garage

One way to keep opossums at bay is to simply remove all food sources in your yard and near your garage. Using trash cans and bins with tightly fitting lids will ensure that opossums do not have access to any food sources in your trash.

Another way to remove opossums from your premises is to close off any holes that might be in your home. This includes your shed, porch, and any undetected burrows that could be in and around your garage. It is also a good idea to invest in some chicken wire to close off any opportunities for opossums to enter your home. To do this effectively, you will need to bury the fencing six inches or more in dirt so opossums cannot just dig underneath the wire.

Using a repellent is another good strategy to keep opossums at bay. You can also put crushed garlic in places where you think opossums would like to hang out. Opossums are opposed to the smell of garlic and will avoid areas with that scent. Ammonia also makes a good repellent; simply pour some ammonia in a coffee can and place an old towel inside the can to help disperse the fumes and scare the opossums off. Afterwards, throw some mothballs in the burrow to make sure the opossum will never come back.

The fall weather has been very crisp and delightful so far, and we want to keep this season that way. It is best to take precautions to keep opossums out of your garage by following the simple steps listed above. No one wants to get sick as a result of having opossums in their garage, and nobody wants to have to repair damages to their garage caused by opossums. Your Garage Checklist for Autumn

October 18, 2017/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

The fall is a wonderful time of the year, where the pumpkins are fully grown, the leaves are changing to beautiful colors, and we are making way for winter to arrive. In the Chicago area and the DuPage County suburbs, the weather will change very abruptly, from warm weather and sun, to cooler weather and a breeze, to overcast skies and rain, to cold days and snow. You will be preparing for the holidays soon enough, but it is a good idea to clean your house before the weather quickly changes. To have peace of mind for your garage during the cold season, you should ask yourself the following questions:

When Should I Clean Out My Garage?

Now is the best time to clean out your garage to prepare for winter. This is a great opportunity to get rid of extra toys and kitchen appliances and give them to people who would like to have them. It is a good idea to start looking for things that you do not want and set them aside to either put up for a garage sale or donate to a local resale shop. Depending on the quality of the unwanted extras, you will need to evaluate whether they are still safe to give to others, or if you should safely dispose of them.

Is Fall the Best Time to Clean Out Gutters?

It is important to clean your gutters at least twice a year, during the fall and spring. If they are not cleaned regularly, water tends to build up in gutters, finding another path and often leaking into the walls and ceilings of the house. During the winter, ice-damming is a major problem that can occur when frozen water is blocked, causing it to push up against the roof and work its way under your shingles, likely destroying the wood, causing more leaks, and costing you a fortune. This issue can be easily resolved by cleaning out your gutters before winter arrives.

How Can I Keep Animals Out of My Garage?

One of the worst things that can happen to you in the winter is finding that a furry creature has created its own living space in your garage. During the fall, it is best to check your garage for any needed repairs, so that you can discover any overlooked damages, such as broken windows or holes that lead into the garage. It is also best to remove any food in your garage, since animals are often attracted to food. Your garbage cans should have tightly sealed lids to keep animals from getting in.

Can I Caulk My Windows During the Fall?

Since your home’s heating system is less likely to be needed in the fall than in the winter, now is the perfect time to caulk your windows. Caulk adheres better in warm temperatures, so it is best to caulk the windows now before the temperature drops. If your windows are not caulked in the winter, cold air will likely come through, and your heating system will have a harder time doing its job to keep you warm during this bitter cold season.

What Should I Do About My Driveway?

If you have not done so already, you may want to consider preparing your driveways and walkways for the upcoming winter season. It is a good idea to refill any cracks and joints in the driveways and walkways with a polyurethane sealant to keep any water from traveling under the driveway, causing lifting and cracking once the water freezes. If your driveway is made of asphalt, you will need to clean the driveway with a degreaser to get any debris and other unwanted particles out of cracks that you may have in your driveway. Filling in your driveway is best when the fall weather is cooler, allowing the sealant to dry faster.

Creative Ideas for Decorating Your Garage for Halloween

October 11, 2017/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

We are at that time of the year where the leaves are changing color, and pumpkin spice beverages are in season. Children are trying to decide what costume they are going to wear while trick-or-treating, and you are probably trying to decide how to decorate your house for Halloween. The possibilities for this spooky holiday are endless, and the good news is, you can go above and beyond in your creativity. There are many ways to convert your garage into a realistic graveyard, a spooky witch’s lair, or just decorate for a Halloween party. Below are a few ideas on how to turn your garage into the best haunted place ever:

A Haunted Maze

Everyone loves a maze, but a good haunted maze will likely get an 11 out of 10 rating in a neighbor’s opinion. If you would like to try creating a haunted maze in your home, you can do the following:

  • Raise the garage door ¾ of the way up and hang a bed sheet in the middle of the garage. The bed sheet will divide the space in half, allowing people to start and finish the maze.
  • Set up a tunnel made of cardboard that kids should go through to get into the garage. The tunnel can be filled with rubber spiders and webbing.
  • Put on some creepy music to get the kids’ adrenaline rushing.
  • Decorate the inside of your garage with bats that hang from the ceiling, spider webs, or even motion activated props.
  • When trick-or-treaters make it out of the haunted maze, then they can get their candy at the end.

Creating a haunted maze does not require a lot of money. Most haunted mazes you can do yourself, making the maze more authentic and creative.

A Garage Door Victim

This idea for a haunted garage this Halloween is a novel one for those who prefer to add a little gore to their decorations. To provide scares for the children coming to your house during trick-or-treat hours, just simply follow these steps.

  • Create a real-life mannequin by stuffing straw, paper, or poly-fil fiber into some clothes.
  • Use a flannel shirt, jeans, and old gym shoes to make the figure more realistic.
  • Put the mannequin in the garage with the bottom half sticking out from under the garage door.
  • Put some ketchup or red paint on the garage door to add a gory effect.

Any used shirt, jeans, and gym shoes will be perfect for this mannequin. Again, this is not a costly investment, but definitely one that will create a great Halloween atmosphere.

Glowing Eyes

Creating glowing eyes on Halloween is probably the quickest and most cost-effective way to decorate your garage.

  • Save up some cardboard tubes and cut eye shapes out of them.
  • Put glow sticks in the cardboard tubes.
  • Duct tape the tubes on the ends.

As glow sticks typically last no more than eight hours at a time, it is always good to keep replacing glow sticks consistently. Keep moving the cardboard tubes around periodically during the month of October to haunt the kids.

A Garage Full of Hands

Finding hand props and mounting them onto your garage will definitely scare the kids. If this is the effect that you’re looking for, consider following these few simple steps:

  • Invest in at least ten fake hand decorations, which are likely available at your local dollar store.
  • Mount the fake hand decorations on the garage with mounting putty.
  • Add certain treats, like an apple or candy.

These fake hand decorations can provide a creepy effect, and they are a cost-effective way to convert your garage into a more haunted area.

How to Know When Your Garage Needs a New Roof

October 4, 2017/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

In the Chicago area and the DuPage County suburbs, the weather changes frequently and, at times, dramatically, from nice sunny days, to severe thunderstorms, to snow blizzards and polar vortexes. These sudden changes in the weather can be the source of problems with your garage’s roof. The age of your roof can also cause issues, such as curling and buckling of shingles. To have a better idea of when to replace your roof, here are some questions to ask:

How Long Does My Roof Last?

The age of your roof is a big determining factor of time of replacement. Typically, a roof will last between 20 and 25 years with no issues. After the roof is at least 20 years old, there will be signs that the roof will need to be replaced, as there will likely be places where the roof might be sagging, or it might show signs of water damage or leakage. When the roof is seeing its last days, there may be dried out spaces or cracks. There might also be a break in the roof for the sun to shine in.

How Do I Know if My Shingles are Curling?

The best way to know if you have any issues with curling or buckling shingles is to view the slopes of the roof that get direct sunlight and to see if there are any shingles with curls or missing granules. If you find any signs of curling, then your roof is probably too old and needs to be replaced. If you had recently replaced your roof, signs of curling can show that there may be problems with your roof, in which case you should contact a roofer to repair the issue.

How Will Weather Affect My Roof Valleys?

Roof valleys are extremely important. Snow and rain will hit the roof and then flow through the roof valley into the gutters, ensuring that there is no leakage or buildup on the roof. If the roof valley’s shingles are missing or loose, then it is time to consider a new roof, since issues with the roof valleys can lead to roof leakage. Leaks can easily be caused by water flowing through the opposite side of the roof valley or from wear and tear from water, snow, or ice buildup on the roof.

Contact Blue Sky Builders, Inc.

The idea of replacing your roof can seem very daunting. The first few questions that you may have typically include the cost of roof replacement, the trustworthiness of the roofers, and the timetable of the roof replacement. With Blue Sky Builders, Inc. by your side, you do not have to worry about anything, as we have 38 years of experience with roof replacement and garage renovation. Since we are passionate about what we do, you can count on us for anything. Comparing Different Types of Driveway Pavement

September 27, 2017/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

When work needs to be done on the exterior of your garage, including your driveway, you may find yourself having a hard time trying to decide what type of pavement to invest in. Cost, durability, and décor are factors that are considered when making this important decision. One size does not fit all; not everyone will want to spend so much money on pavers, and many others will not want their driveway to look simplistic with basic asphalt. All three types of pavement described below are good for driveways, but the perfect selection depends on several different factors and your own personal preferences.

Asphalt Pavement

Asphalt is the least expensive type of pavement. The average cost per square foot to resurface an asphalt driveway is $2.24, which makes this the option with the lowest cost. Even though asphalt is the least decorative of the three types of pavement, some advantages of asphalt pavement include:

  • The ease of removing snow in colder temperatures
  • Good economy
  • Great durability
  • Safety
  • Recyclability

Stamped Concrete Pavement

Choosing the best driveway material truly depends on your budget. Stamped concrete provides a high quality option without being too costly. The initial cost of stamped concrete pavement installment can range between $6 and $15 per square foot. Stamped concrete is more expensive than asphalt, but the advantages of having a stamped pavement driveway include:

  • Less maintenance
  • Longer durability
  • Increased property value of the home

Pavers

Of the three types of driveway pavement, pavers are the most expensive. This option is the most decorative type of pavement, and it allows a homeowner to have a more high-end look while paying more for the display. Types of pavers include:

  • Red or gray brick pavers, which typically cost between $0.50 and $10 per brick
  • Dry laid brick pavers, typically costing $18 per square foot
  • Clay bricks, costing between $300 and $700 per pallet (each pallet equates to 56 square feet, making the cost per square foot between $5.35 and $12.50)

How to Keep Skunks Away from Your Garage

September 20, 2017/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Fall is one of the most wonderful times of the year, where the leaves are changing colors, the weather is getting cooler, and pumpkin spice flavored beverages are becoming more popular. This is a great time for everyone, but there is one small problem: that annoying animal that can leave an unwanted odor in your garage around this time of year. If you spot a skunk near your house, you will want to do anything you can to keep it from leaving an odor in your garage. If you are experiencing such a problem, here are a few tips on how to keep these annoying creatures away:

  1. Seal Any Holes that You Find – Skunks like to burrow in areas of your house that may be difficult to find. It is important to know that several places under the house, deck, and yard could be grounds for a skunk to create a living space. The best tools to use when covering any possible holes or potential hiding spaces include solid metal flash wire and screening.
  1. Keep Your Garbage Safe – Any garbage lying around in your yard could be grounds for a habitat for skunks. It is important to keep garbage in a covered bin so that skunks will not be attracted to the smell. This will not only keep your yard and garage area looking nice and clean, but skunks will have a harder time calling your place their home.
  1. Use Repellents – There are many ways to keep skunks at bay. Some of the most common home remedies include water infused with boiled cayenne pepper, onions, and jalapeno peppers that can be sprayed on skunks. However, if you do not have a lot of time, or you do not have these products, then some other repellents include mothballs, ammonia-soaked rags, and peppermint.

Using a Car Cover to Protect Your Car Inside and Outside Your Garage

September 13, 2017/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

For some people, their car is like their baby, something to be treasured and shown off, but also taken care of meticulously. Whether you keep your car inside your garage, in your driveway, or elsewhere, one of the best ways to protect it from the elements and keep it looking shiny and new is to use a car cover.

Car covers come in a variety of different materials, and choosing the right type of car cover depends on where you park your car and how often you plan to cover it up.

Indoor Car Covers
When you park your car in your garage, a simple, lightweight fabric cover is a great way to keep dirt and dust off your car and avoid scratches. This type of cover is easy to put on and take off, so it is a great solution for anyone who drives regularly but still wants to keep their car protected when they are not using it.

For cars which are driven less frequently, or in garages that get a lot of use, a heavier car cover can provide extra protection. These types of covers are typically made of flannel or have a wool lining, and they can help prevent dents and dings from the sports equipment or tools that are often stored alongside them in a garage.

Outdoor Car Covers
When a car is parked outside, a good cover can protect it from rain, snow, dust, pollen, bird droppings, tree sap, and the sun’s UV rays. If you plan to drive your car regularly and cover it wherever you park, a lightweight, water-resistant cover can provide protection while being easy to put on and take off.

For regions which experience a lot of temperature and weather variation (such as the Midwest, where we often have hot, humid summers followed by cold, snowy winters), a more heavy-duty car cover can provide protection for your car throughout the year. These types of heavyweight covers can also provide additional protection against scratches and dings for people who park in a public parking lot or someplace with lots of pedestrian traffic.

Tips for Using a Car Cover
No matter what type of car cover you choose, it is important to use a material that is breathable, which will make sure that condensation and heat do not get trapped between the cover and the car and damage the paint job. It is also a good idea to make sure your car is clean before putting a cover on it since the cover can rub against any dust or dirt that is on the surface of the car and have an abrasive effect.
