Tips on Organizing and Preparing Your Garage for the Cooler Temperatures Ahead

October 1, 2021/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Adequately preparing a house and its garage for colder temperatures is a critical responsibility that homeowners in the Midwest face every year. While it may seem like a burdensome and inconvenient task, preparing a garage for the winter months is crucial for a garage’s optimal use and functionality through those months.

This blog will provide some of the recommended changes that may greatly benefit your garage for the cold months ahead and beyond.

Transitioning Your Garage After Summer

Transitioning a garage at the beginning of the fall season allows for many short-term and long-term benefits. Preparing your garage at this time of year will help prevent the need of completing the chore when the temperatures are much less tolerable. For seasonal storage needs, it will also help you find things easier, saving you time and effort.

1.) Declutter: this allows you to get rid of things you no longer need an darrange for organized storage.

In the summer, it is not uncommon for people to regularly leave their vehicles and other belongings outside. However, this is not so likely in colder parts of the year and you will need to make sure your garage has ample space to safely park your vehicle, and store summer appliances like lawnmowers and garden tools.

2.) Organize Storage: Storage organization is an important part of transforming a garage for the chilly temperatures to come.

As the summer months have come to a close, summer toys will need a space to be kept until spring. For instance, bicycles can take up a lot of space and you may opt to hang bikes on a wall or from the ceiling. It may be wise to rotate any storage you currently have so that winter items are readily available and easy to find.

Avoiding Garage Concerns Seen in Winter Months

Preparing a garage’s functionality far in advance will help to avoid incurring extra electric and heating costs as well as prevent any storage items from being damaged.

Unfortunately, some garage owners fail to consider what items should and should not be stored in the garage throughout freezing or near-freezing temperatures. This can lead to seriously damaged belongings and further inconveniences.

Avoid the following:

  • Storing paper items in the garage, which may attract rodents and other pests
  • Storing paint in the garage, which may cause the paint to separate or curdle
  • Storing certain cleaning products in a garage, which may lead to release of toxic chemicals
  • Storing propane tanks in the garage can make the space susceptible to fires

To maintain a garage’s functionality through frigid temperatures. Many methods may be pursued to insulate a garage for optimal use during winter. Some ideas include:

  • Installing additional insulation to the garage’s ceiling and walls
  • Check all doors and window frames for proper weatherstripping that is not peeled or cracked
  • It is important to make sure that garage door seals are tight and properly installed

Garage owners should also be aware of the quality of the springs on the garage door. Garage springs are susceptible to snapping during seasons with fluctuating temperatures so it is important to address any signs of damage or wear and replace if necessary.
