Top 4 Reasons To Get a New Garage This Year

March 19, 2014/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

March is the perfect time to start planning your new garage! With the weather warming up – hopefully – it is time to start making decisions about getting a new garage or upgrading an existing one.

Here are 5 reasons to get a new garage this year:

1. Your Garage Is In Disrepair

Arguably the biggest reason to get a new garage is that your current garage is in disrepair, whether it is outdated, in poor condition, or a safety hazard.

2. You Need More Space

So maybe your garage is in acceptable condition, but you need more space! Whether you are adding more cars to the collection or just have a lot of stuff, a new garage or a bigger garage can help you in your path towards organization. Learn more about choosing the right size garage.

3. You Want To Increase Your Home’s Value

A garage will make your home more appealing to buyers. Beyond a new garage, upgrading the size of your garage, or even small improvements, like updating your garage door, can add value.

4. You Want To Protect Your Car(s)

Each year, $1.26 billion in personal items and accessories are stolen from vehicles in about 1.85 million thefts (Nationwide). A garage can help keep your car safe and secure from damage and theft. Beyond security, a garage can help extend the life of your car.

How to Clean Your Garage: Tips on Spring-Cleaning

March 12, 2014/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

With spring just around the corner-spring is just around the corner isn’t it?-it’s never too early to start thinking about how to spruce up the cluttered abyss that has become your garage. Sometime during those long, dark months of relentless cold your garage became buried, not just under the vast accumulation of snow but under your junk. And so it is time for a fresh start! It is time to clear away the salt stains and make way for those long anticipated gardening supplies and lawnmower. Here are some tips to help you get started:

1. Assess the Mess

Garages typically end up being that one place in the house where things go in, but never come out. But not today! It’s finally time to take inventory. Pull out everything-from those rusty garden sheers to that pile of mystery electrical wires. From there you can make piles: yard sale, Goodwill, garbage, and storage. This is a time to be honest with yourself, if you haven’t used it in the last 3 years chances are you won’t in the next 3 either.

2. Zone the Space

With the garage clear you can better visualize where exactly things can go. In order for this to be successful, you should first determine what you want to use the space for. Parking is normally high on the list, but what else? Storage for files, tools, holiday decorations? What about that workout space you’ve always wanted? (See Alternative Uses for Your Garage) Based on these categories you can then separate your garage into different zones. This is helpful because if everything has a designated spot then you can better limit the volume. That is to say, if it doesn’t fit, it doesn’t stay.

3. Think Vertical

Once your garage has been appropriately zoned, its time to rethink the storage. It is recommended that all storage remain off the garage floor-this allows for easy sweeping and prevents the slow creep of access junk across the floor space. One option for vertical storage is to use a sheet of particleboard or medium-density fiberboard secured to the walls and rafters. This creates a useful loft for deep storage. As a rule of thumb: the less often a category of stuff is used, the higher up it should go. Frequently used items, like tools, can be attached to pegboard or hung from hooks. Also, convert all those old cardboard boxes (common nesting grounds for rodents) into plastic. Then use a marker to illustrate the contents that are not immediately apparent.

Those days of great sunshine and warmth are approaching! Don’t be stuck in the dark and clutter lurking in your garage. Clean things up today-so when spring finally arrives you have the time and space to kick back and relax!

Can you share any spring cleaning tips for the garage? Please let us know in the comment box below!

Garage Door Makeover: Transformation Tips

March 5, 2014/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

When designing a garage door, it is important to select one that is appropriately styled to compliment the rest of your home. This is particularly important when an attached garage faces forward, making it a central aspect of your home’s curb appeal. Also, with the increasing trend of the three-car garage, the garage door now potentially covers a significant portion of a house’s front landscape. Feeling the pressure? Don’t be! A quick garage door makeover is easy for any style house. You will find that attractive, compatible look in no time! To get those creative juices flowing, check out some of these gorgeous garage door makeovers!

Carriage House Doors

These doors elegantly combine the classic “swing-open” appearance and detail specification of authentic carriage house wood door with the contemporary convenience of standard sectional doors. Choose from countless window options and decorative wrought iron hardware to place the finishing touches on your makeover.

French-Door

Constructed to emulate the timeless class of French doors, this design offers privacy without sacrificing style. By creating the appearance of a graceful sunroom at the front of the house, onlookers from the street would never guess it was really a garage. Yet the doors are built to conventionally rollup and reveal the hidden cars (and junk).

Decorative Trim and Windows

It’s amazing the difference a few window insets and architectural trim can make. Windows can visually balance the exterior of your house and decorative trim adds appropriate design interest. These little details help spice up the personality of your home and enhance its curb appeal. Remember-a compatible color scheme is key to the success of this makeover.

Consider these ideas as you continue brainstorming for your big makeover. Every garage is unique so don’t be afraid to standout! For help turning your dream makeover into a reality contact us today!

Motor Mansions: Ultimate Celebrity Garages

February 26, 2014/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Anyone can buy a fleet of Porsches or caravan of Ferraris-okay well maybe not anyone-but its takes a real “big time” celebrity to construct a garage more expensive and fancier than most people’s houses. Check out some of these mind-blowing garages of celebrities with a serious need for speed and style. Try to guess which celeb owns each automotive palace-the answers are at the end but no cheating!

Garage #1

Where: Ocala, FL

Highlights: This actor not only has garage space big enough for his 16+ cars but also two separate ports and private runways for his 2 private jets. Some celebs may claim to use their jets like automobiles but this actor, who is licensed to fly planes as large as 747s, really does.

Hint: From singing in old greasy garages to dancing his way through the disco fever of the 70’s, this celebrity’s skills extend well beyond simple acting.

Garage #2

Where: Long Island, NY

Highlights: This actor organizes his 70 sports cars by both brand and color. Within this extensive garage space is a full functioning gas station. All 70 machines are kept in running condition at all times, ready for him to drive them to various events and private drives.

Hint: Fashion, not automobiles, is where his original expertise lies.

Garage #3

Where: Southern California

Highlights: With 200+ cars, 90+ motorcycles, a full mechanic tool setup and team, and enough antique posters to cover the entire interior and exterior twice-this complex is said to better resemble a museum than a garage. In fact, this garage is so famous it even has its own website and Facebook page.

Hint: He has turned a few heads not only with his Late Night jokes but also his overly prominent chin.

Garage #4

Where: Manhattan, NY

Highlights: Looks can be deceiving, and the exterior of this actor’s 46-car Porsche collection is just that. Beyond those walls lies a 3-story subterranean compound featuring 4 separate garage spaces, an elevator, a clubroom with a pool table, a kitchenette and bathroom, and a sizable office.

Hint: He developed and starred in his own self-titled sitcom.

With these elaborate setups housing some of the rarest cars in the world, these garages should come with a warning: “Will Cause Jaws to Drop”. Big cars, small cars, fast cars, old cars-there’s no question these impressive car collections are bound to cause a little garage envy.

Answers: 1) John Travolta, 2) Ralph Lauren, 3) Jay Leno, 4) Jerry Seinfeld

Garage Makeover: Alternative Uses For Your Garage

February 12, 2014/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Everything that is not wanted in the house but too heavy to put in the attic is banished to the stockpile accumulating in the garage. Before you know it, every inch of space in your garage has been consumed by items that will be needed “one day”. But until that day all potential usage of the garage is eliminated-even the car has been pushed out onto the driveway. For some households, the family car relocating outside the house may be inevitable, but that does not justify the conversion of potential living space into an ever-growing dumping ground. Even if you are one of the few not feeling cramped in your home, this extra space can make life easier and add a new depth to the value of your home.

Need help brainstorming? Check out these great ideas!

The “Man Cave”

The conversion from garage to “man cave” is actually rather simple. Since elaborate decorations are usually low on the priority list, the amenities needed to complete this room are pretty straightforward. All a “man cave” needs is some comfortable armchairs, a couch or two, a home entertainment system, a plethora of videogames, a refrigerator to keep the beer, and a table to lay out the pizzas, chips, sandwiches, and so on. With these in place, your garage has now been converted into a well-equipped certified, “man cave”.

Home Gym

End that expensive gym membership and ditch the crowds! Be the family that wants to get in shape and stay in shape with your new in-home gym. Odds are at one point or another you have purchased and then forgotten about some gym equipment, why not consider investing in a cardio machine, few dumbbells, and a couple mirrors? Then just add a few speakers and you’ll be sure to keep that New Year’s resolution with your very own 24hr fitness center.

Home Office

Ask anyone who works from home what one of their top problems is-a set workplace free from the distractions of their home-life. The answer really is as simple as converting the garage into your personal office. Just paint the walls, lay some carpet, and maybe even add a skylight for additional light. You will be secluded from distractions yet still able to benefit from the conveniences of working from home.

In most homes, the garage is significantly underutilized space. Even on a limited budget, this space can be transformed into your family’s most used room. Contact Blue Sky Builders, Inc. today to find out how you can successfully convert your garage into your dream room.

5 Famous Companies That Started in a Garage

February 5, 2014/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Garages can be a big part of everyday life. And over the years, garages have become more than just car storage and have transformed into true extensions of the home. In fact, many famous companies even started in a garage!

Check out these 5 companies that got started in a garage:

1. Mattel

In 1945, friends Harold Matson and Elliot Handler founded Mattel, a picture frame company, out of a garage in Southern CA. Using picture frame scraps, they began constructing dollhouses as a way to get the most out of their materials. Before long, their dollhouses were selling faster than their picture frames. Encouraged by the growing success of these side projects, Mattel decided to turn their attention to toys instead. Beginning with the Mickey Mouse Club television show and the Barbie line, Mattel soon became a household name. Today, Mattel ranks as the world’s highest-grossing toy company in the world.

2. Apple

In 1976, 21-year-old Steve Jobs and 26-year-old Steve Wozniak began a small company selling hand-built computers from their garage in Cupertino, CA. From the humble days of the Apple I, Apple II, and original Macintosh line, Apple is now one of the largest companies with the most innovative and sought-after technology to date.

3. Amazon

In 1994, Jeff Bezos started an online bookstore completely operated from his garage in Bellevue, Washington. In year 2, the company sold its first book. The company offered its first IPO in year 4. And then in year 9, Amazon joined the prestigious Fortune 500 where it has only grown ever since.

4. Disney

In 1923, Roy and Walt Disney set up the very first Disney Studio in their Uncle Roy’s one-car garage. This garage was the birthplace of their first film the “Alice Comedies”, which later became the Alice in Wonderland animation. Overcoming countless rejections from investors, Disney is now the highest-grossing media empire in the world!

5. Yankee Candle

In 1969, 16-year-old Michael Kittredge began making scented candles using melted crayons as a gift for his mother’s birthday. With growing interest from neighbors and the help of two high school classmates, Kittredge’s garage business expanded rapidly. Eventually, due to enormous growth, the company relocated to Massachusetts. Kittredge sold the business in 1999 and today it is currently one of the largest scented candle manufacturers in the industry.

Painting Your Garage Door: 7 Easy Steps To Follow

January 29, 2014/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Painting your garage door can seem like a daunting task that many homeowners fear. So many things that have potential to go wrong: Bubbling, warping, running paint are all things that can cause homeowner headaches. However, by following these 7 Easy Steps to Paint Your Garage Door, you can bring beauty and durability to your garage door’s appearance.

1. Testing the Weather before Painting

Before grabbing that bucket of paint, you need to think of the appropriate time to paint that door. You need to complete this project when temperatures aren’t too hot or cold. You’ll also want to avoid rainy or cloudy days. Be sure that you start early on the day you do choose so you’ll have enough time to complete the project.

2. Preparing Garage Doors for Painting

This is probably the toughest part of the job, but also the most important. You have to prepare the surface if you want that new paint job to last. Start by sanding down the peeling paint. If you have metal garage doors, you’ll need to sand down any rust. You’ll also want to paint metal doors with primer to prevent further rusting.

3. Cleaning Your Garage Door

Be sure to clean the garage door thoroughly before you start painting. Wash down with a sponge or use a power washer set on low. Pay attention to the lower part of the door since this is where the most dirt accumulates.

4. Tape the Areas You Don’t Want to Paint

Prepping the door may take time and it may seem unnecessary, but if you do take the time to tape off the areas you don’t want to get paint on, you’ll save time later on. Lay down plastic under the door to keep the wet paint from sticking to the ground underneath the door.

5. Priming Your Garage Door

If you are changing colors, or if there are dark or rust spots on the door, you’ll want to paint a coat of primer first. Be sure you use a primer that is made for outdoor use and one suited to the surface you are painting.

6. Paint

Now, you are finally ready to start painting, but don’t rush the job. You want to make sure you have everything you need; paint, brushes, and everything else you need. Use a latex based paint and add one layer of thin paint at a time. Allow each coat to dry before you start painting the next. Use a paint roller for the larger areas and a brush for the edges and corners. Add three to five coats of paint, but be sure to allow each coat dry for a few hours before you add the next. Review your work as you go, making sure you’ve covered all areas of the door in each layer.

7. Clean Up

Once you finish painting the garage doors, be sure you clean up and remove any open paint containers. Thoroughly wash paint brushes and remove paint rags from the area. Keep the tape and plastic down for 24 hours before removing. This will ensure the paint doesn’t come off on any other surfaces.

Your Garage is Important, Keep it in Top Shape

We understand that painting garage door can assist in not only the beauty of a home, but also the value. Understanding the task at hand and knowing where to begin can ensure that you will have a safe, easy, and mishap-free garage painting experience. Spring is coming, and we hope to help you with all the needs of your garage building, maintaining, or remodeling experience. Garage Door Safety: LiftMaster Introduces Don’t Chance It, Check It

January 22, 2014/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

As builders of custom garages and proponents of garage safety; our team at Blue Sky Builders, Inc. would like to inform you of a recent campaign by LiftMaster Garage Doors called “Don’t Chance It, Check It.” As LiftMaster Door Openers are the primary choice of Blue Sky Builders, Inc., we believe that this information will benefit you and your family.

LiftMaster’s “Don’t Chance It, Check It” Campaign

(Via PR Newswire) Garages continue to serve as a major hub of activity in the modern household, often becoming the primary entry point into the home and a storage center for everything from soccer balls to snow blowers. But, with one out of every 15 garage door openers lacking the latest safety features, there is a hidden threat in millions of households across America. To avoid injuries from the largest and heaviest moving object in the home, LiftMaster – the number one manufacturer of professionally installed garage door openers in the world – is announcing its national “Don’t Chance It. Check It.™” Garage Safety Initiative.

Once considered a luxury item, automatic garage door openers are now installed in 35 million households across the country, with more than 70 percent of homeowners relying on their garage door as the main access point to the home. As more and more garage door openers made their way into American homes over the last several decades, laws were enacted to ensure the safety of those using them. However, prior to 1993, protection systems, such as infrared sensors or “photo-eyes” that stop a garage door before making contact with an object or person – were not mandatory.

Instead, garage door openers were equipped with force-sensing safety systems that only reverse the door after it makes contact with an object. These older models can be safe and reliable if installed, tested and maintained properly. But unless they’re retrofitted with photo-eyes, the vast majority of these older units still are not up to today’s standard in safety.

“Millions of garages lack the latest safety features, like photo-eyes or may not be operating properly,” said Bob Markwart, President, LiftMaster, Americas. “We believe it is our industry’s responsibility to do our best to ensure everyone is educated on what makes a garage truly safe. LiftMaster’s ‘Don’t Chance It. Check It.’ initiative helps families ensure everything is in working order with the largest moving object in the home by providing three easy-to-follow safety tests that use everyday household items and only two minutes of time.”

Testing Your Garage’s Safety Features

The program, currently rolling out to a national audience, is designed to help homeowners and families understand how to check their door and make sure they have the safest garage door opener system in place. Follow these three easy steps to ensure safe functionality of any automatic garage door openers installed after 1993 or retrofitted with safety eyes:

  1. Check the sides of the garage door for properly installed photo-eyes (black sensors), mounted no higher than six inches off the floor.
  2. Block the photo-eye with an object over six inches tall and press the close button on the garage door opener. The door should not close.
  3. Lay an object that is at least 1.5 inches in height flat on the ground in the door’s path and press the close button. Household objects this size might be a bar of soap, stack of index cards, or a hardcover book. The door should reverse off this object. If it makes contact and does not reverse, the door is not operating correctly.

How Can You Keep Your Garage Safe?

As we are proponents of LiftMaster Garage Door openers, we believe that the safety tips offered by the company are imperative to keep your family safe year-round. Spring is right around the corner, and with the warm weather comes more time outdoors. Ensure your garage is in top condition by contacting the experts at Blue Sky Builders, Inc.. We offer solutions from repairs to custom built garages, and the best way to ensure safety is to schedule your spring inspection now!

Celebrating 35 Years Building Garages In The Chicagoland Area

January 15, 2014/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Blue Sky Builders, Inc. is proud to announce our 35th anniversary! We have been building garages in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs since 1979.

From our humble beginnings in our homes to our first office location in Westmont on Naperville Road, we are thankful to our customers who allowed us to do what we love and grow our business into our current Downer’s Grove location.

Below we will share a little bit of history of our company and how things have changed over the last 35 years.

How Blue Sky Builders, Inc. Started

Rick Newtoff and Scott Wendell started Blue Sky Builders, Inc. in 1979. Originally, we began as subcontractors who got our work from other garage builders or construction companies. Over time, we started generating some word of mouth referrals and began to do some modest advertising of our own (newspapers, fliers, Yellow Pages).

We upgraded from our first office (our homes!) into our office in Westmont on Naperville Road (pictured below).

In 1999, we moved to our current location in Downers Grove (424 Ogden Ave.) to increase street visibility for our business. If you are from the area you are probably familiar with the amount of traffic on Ogden! This move was just another factor in helping us grow our business.

What Has Changed In The Past 35 Years

In the past 35 years, we have experienced a lot of changes in garages and what customers desire now.

Garages have changed from just being shelters for cars to storage units for cars and possessions. With the rise of finished basements, a lot of people had no space for common storage, so possessions have been increasingly stored in garages.

As a result, garage size preferences have completely shifted throughout our career. 35 years ago, most families had a one-car garage. Now 2 car garages are even too small for some. In fact, most prefer a 2 ½, 3, or 4-car garage with additional storage above.

Technology has also changed significantly over the past 35 years. Most notably for us is the type of sidings we are now using. Due to cost and maintenance reasons, the traditional wood siding we used to use is being replaced with vinyl siding.

Here are some photos of garages we built “back in the day”:

Pictured above: Owners Rick Newtoff and Scott Wendell building a garage.

What Keeps Blue Sky Builders, Inc. Going Strong?

Satisfying our customers is our number one goal, priority, and motivation. What we enjoy most is designing a garage with customers needs and wants in mind. Every garage is built to the owner’s specifications – not what we want to build – and with that in mind it gives us great satisfaction.

“I was always told to find something you like to do, and 35 years later, I still get up enjoying the work I do.” (Rick Newtoff – Blue Sky Builders, Inc. Owner)

Finally, we would like to send a big thank you to all of our customers!
