Blue Sky Builders, Inc. has helped hundreds of homeowners in the Chicagoland area build their brand new dream garage and/or renovate their current garage. Some of our customers have been so kind as to give us their testimonials on their garages that we have built and/or remodeled for them. We will share some of these below.

“I am very happy with my garage, and also with the quality of service from every one of the workmen at every stage of the project. Everyone was friendly as well as competent. I also appreciate the way you were always there when I had a question and always got back to me as quickly as possible with the answer. And I especially appreciate the way you went the exra mile and did things you didn’t have to do, like bringing in the load of gravel to fill the low spot in my driveway so I could actually drive into the garage. I will definitely recommend Blue Sky to anyone I know. Thank you again for a job well done.”

You followed your word and the contract to the letter – no surprises, no misunderstandings, no cost overruns. This was fantastic. The tradesmen who did the job were skilled, efficient, friendly and courteous. They came, they “did”, and they left. The job site was cleaned up and our garage looks wonderful. We would highly recommend your company to anyone who was looking to build a garage.”

Choosing The Right Lighting For Your Garage

May 3, 2013/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

The style, size, and door type are some of the biggest considerations when getting a new garage. Often, lighting is an afterthought. However, lighting is very important for your garage. Proper lighting can increase the safety, usability, and aesthetic appeal of a garage. In an article, Garage Lighting Tips, Wanda Thibodeaux shared three important considerations for choosing the right lighting for your garage: placement, safety, and bulb type.

Placement

The first step in a lighting installation plan is determining the placement of lights. Ideally, you want to install the lights in areas that require visual accessibility. Examples would be lights placed over a workbench or the area of the garage that corresponds to above the vehicle engine. This will make it easier for you to see what you are doing during minor repairs or when working on a project. You may want to consider installing light fixtures that have built-in electrical outlets so you can plug in electrical tools that might be needed during the repairs or other work.

Safety

Try to avoid placing lights in ways that result in a lot of shadows. This will help to increase the safety level of the garage, because it will make it harder for individuals to stay hidden. Make sure you install a light at all garage entrances. Try to install lights at an equal distance around the garage. if possible. In terms of safety, consider the height of the lights. Overhead lighting may be optimal for visual needs, for instance, but if your garage has a high ceiling, remember that you will need to get up on a ladder every time you need to change a bulb. Instead, consider placing fixtures on the upper portion of the walls instead of the ceiling.

Bulb Type

Use the right bulb type for your garage. For garages used mainly for vehicle and property storage, incandescent lighting typically is just fine, but you’ll want to use fluorescent lights if you do a lot of repairs or projects in the garage space. Keep in mind that incandescent bulbs do not need a few seconds to produce light, as fluorescents do. This may be an important factor for you if you live in an area that experiences cold weather for much of the year or if your garage does not have insulation, because fluorescent lights respond more slowly the colder it gets.

Garage Door Opener Basics

May 1, 2013/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

When it comes to garage door openers, there are a lot more options nowadays. In the past standard garage door openers such as chain-driven models, belt-driven models, and screw-driven openers were the only options available to those interested in automating their garage doors. Now, residential jackshaft and direct-drive models have been introduced.

An article from Bob Vila, Garage Door Openers 101, shared details about the different types of garage door openers, including some advantages and disadvantages. We will share more details below.

Standard Garage Door Openers

Standard garage door openers include chain-driven models, belt-drive openers, and screw-driven openers.

Chain-Driven Models

A chain (similar to a bicycle chain) pushes or pulls a trolley that connects to a metal bar, called a J-arm, that is affixed to the garage door.

  • Advantage: Newer chain-driven units with DC motors and soft start-and-stop technology are significantly quieter than older units.
  • Disadvantage: If your garage is situated under a bedroom, the noise generated by metal-to-metal contact and vibration may be a nuisance.

Belt-Driven Openers

Very similar in design to chain-driven models, except a reinforced belt is the what pushes or pulls the trolley. Belts are made of fiberglass, polyurethane, or steel-reinforced rubber.

  • Advantage: Belt-driven openers are just as reliable as chain-driven openers but quieter.
  • Disadvantage: Belt-driven openers cost about $30 to $60 more than chain-driven units.

Screw-Driven Openers

With screw-driven openers, the trolley rides on a threaded-steel rod as a motor rotates the rod.

  • Advantage: Because this design has fewer moving parts, manufacturers claim that it requires less maintenance than other systems. Screw-driven openers are among speediest these days, opening a door at 10- to 12-in. per second compared to the standard 6- to 8-in. per second.
  • Disadvantage: Screw-driven openers have run into trouble in regions that have large swings in temperature from summer to winter. In addition, they are noisier than belt-driven openers.

Jackshaft and Direct-Drive Garage Door Openers

Jackshaft openers

Unlike other garage door opener systems, jackshaft openers mount on the wall beside the garage door. A 24-v DC motor drives pulleys and cables that turn the torsion bar and raise the garage door. When the motor is reversed, cable tension is loosened and the door lowers.

  • Advantage: This system is reliable and quiet. In addition, it keeps the ceiling free for overhead storage and is well-suited to garages with high or low ceilings.
  • Disadvantage: Jackshaft openers are more expensive than most other types of openers.

Direct-Drive Units

Developed and manufactured in Germany, the motor (not a trolley) travels along a stationary chain that is embedded in an overhead rail. A J-arm links the moving motor to the door.

  • Advantage: Direct-drive units are claimed to be the quietest of all garage door units, because there is only one moving part-the motor. Direct-drive units cost about the same as belt-driven units and come with lifetime warranties.

Types of Garages: Gambrel Garages

April 17, 2013/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

In our three-part garage type series we have been focusing on the different types of garages that are available, details on each type, and real pictures of garages we have built. Our final post will focus on Gambrel Garages.

Garages with a gambrel roof, also known as “barn style”, have a straight ridge in the center like gable garages. However, they differ in that there are two roof sections on each side of a gambrel garage, as opposed to one. The lower roof section has a steep pitch while the higher roof section has a much shallower pitch. This greatly maximizes interior space and headroom. Below we will share some advantages of gambrel garages and pictures of gambrel garages we have built in Chicago and surrounding suburbs.

Advantages of Gambrel Garages

Some advantages of gambrel garages include:

  • Because of the shape of the roof, gambrel garages offer the most space
  • Handles wind loads well
  • Again, steep sides allow rain and snow to run off easily

Perhaps the biggest advantage of the gambrel garage is the added space. You receive the maximum amount of usable space, compared to other garage types. In fact, most will even allow for a second floor in the garage. With the addition of a dormer, such as extending a shed dormer off of the upper roof, you can increase the usable interior space even more.

In our three-part garage type series we will be focusing on the different types of garages that are available, details on each type, and real pictures of garages we have built. This post will focus on Hip Garages.

Overall, hip garages are the most common type of garage for a variety of reasons.

Hip garages are four sided, as opposed to the two-sided gable roof discussed in our last blog post. Below we will share some advantages of hip garages and pictures of hip garages we have built in the Chicago and surrounding suburbs.

Advantages of Hip Garages

A hip garage may seem like the most basic and simple option, but with the right touches, it can be an extremely attractive addition to your home and property while still being affordable and functional. Advantages of hip garages include:

  • Strong and cost-effective
  • Similar to a gable garage, 4 steep slopes allow rain and snow to run off
  • Easy to incorporate into an existing structure

Like gabled garages, hip garages are common in areas that receive a lot of snow. Steep slopes are advantageous in areas that have a lot of snow in the winter. However, hip garages are less vulnerable than gable garages to high wind.

In our three-part garage type series we will be focusing on the different types of garages that are available, details on each type, and real pictures of garages we have built. This post will focus on Gable Garages.

Gable garages are one of the most common types of garage. This simple, yet practical style of garage offers numerous possibilities.

What is a gable garage? With two sloping sides that come together at a ridge, gable garages are built to match the gables on the house. The triangular gable faces the front. Below we will share some advantages of gable garages, pictures of gable garages we have built in the Chicago area, and some information on reverse gable garages.

Advantages of Gable Garages

The gable roof is one of the most common, not only for aesthetic purposes, but also for the large amount of interior space that it can provide. Other advantages of gable garages include:

  • Sturdy design
  • Allows for vaulted ceilings, increasing storage space
  • The sleep slopes allow rain and snow to run off much easier than other types of roofs
  • The pitch can be varied to match the look of your home
  • Windows can be added to the gable ends
  • Shakes and frieze boards can be installed to dress up the front

A build up of snow a roof can be damaging, and even cause roof cave ins. The steep slopes of gabled garages are advantageous in areas that have a lot of snow in the winter. On the other hand, gabled garages are not quite as common in areas that have high risks of hurricanes or tornadoes.

How to Choose The Right Size Garage

March 27, 2013/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

If you are going to get a new garage, there are many things to take into consideration. Important considerations include style (custom, hip, gable) and material, and size. The size of your garage is critical in meeting your garage needs. When choosing a size you should consider your vehicles, storage needs, walking space, and your available land space. Below are some guidelines for choosing the right size garage from eHow.

The minimum size for most single-car garages is 12 feet wide by 20 feet long. For a two-car garage the minimum dimensions are 18 feet wide by 20 feet long. Understand these are minimum dimensions if you plan on limiting your storage primarily to automobiles, with minimum room for walking.

Consider Your Vehicle When Choosing Garage Size

Measure the length of the vehicle or vehicles you want to store in the garage. Measure both the length and width, with doors open. Consider if you will move to a larger vehicle in the future. Measure the length of the trailer and boat if you wish to store them in the garage.

Storage Needs

Make a list of all the items you want stored in your garage. Common items include cars, lawnmowers, tools, sports equipment, refrigerators and workbenches. Consider all these items when determining the size of your garage. Determine from your list if there will be a need for shelves.

Extra room will enhance garage storage space. Adding just 2 or 4 extra feet to the length or width of a garage creates a lot of extra room. You can build a wall of shelving 24 inches deep that takes up garage space from floor to ceiling. Acquiring this kind of room expands the cubic feet of storage space, so you can stack boxes or bins of items. It’s possible to build a workbench into the wall storage space, too.

Walking Space

Consider how much walking space you need in your garage with all items present. The best way to accomplish this is to park your vehicle or vehicles in an open area as if they were parked in the garage. Open their doors. Place all your other items around the vehicles where you would like them to be. Leave 4 feet of space for walking around each vehicle. Measure the dimensions.

Land Space

Observe your available land space for the size of your garage. If your home is in a residential area, make sure the garage will not be too close to adjacent property. If the home is in the country, determine which trees will need to be removed or land reshaped to accommodate the garage size you want.

Blue Sky Builders, Inc. can help you choose the garage size that is right for you. If you have any questions, please contact us. Or for more information, you can view typical garage styles and sizes here.

Spring Cleaning Tips For Your Garage

March 20, 2013/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Today marks the official start of the spring season, and with that comes spring cleaning! When it comes to spring cleaning, many overlook their garage. Don’t neglect your garage this year. Follow these 6 simple steps from Men’sHealth to get your garage clean:

1. Assess the Mess

Pick a sunny morning to pull everything out of the garage and take inventory; you’ll immediately see what you no longer need.

Divide into categories keep, garbage, recycling, and sell/give away. Make a yard sale pile for duplicates or items you haven’t used in at least 3 years.

2. Throw Things Out

Dispose of items that are broken and can’t be fixed, or are too old to be of use to anyone. Make a separate pile for toxic or recyclable stuff-car batteries, old mower gas-and dispose of them responsibly. (Visit earth911.com for recycling advice and resources.)

3. Zone Your Space

With the garage clear, try to visualize where the big things (workbench, mower) might fit. Also, designate areas for specific items you need regular access to-yard tools, for instance. For more organization tips, read Garage Makeover: S.T.O.P. Clutter.

4. Freshen Up

Hang pegboard for small tools, and metal reels for hoses and cords.

Treat the floor with an epoxy coating, such as gray UCoat It, which takes 4 to 12 hours to dry. This finish prevents spill absorption and makes cleanups easier.

5. Mobilize Your Gear

Pull out a black marker and make a label for any box or bin with contents that are not immediately apparent.

Place large items (cabinets, plastic bins) on plywood moving dollies.

6. Show it Off

Invite your pals over-and make sure they’re jealous of your organizational skills.

Common Garage Door Problems and How to Fix Them

March 13, 2013/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

The three most common problems you may run into with your garage door is a screeching sound, not going down all the way, or the remote-operated garage door won’t open. The A-Authentic Arizona Garage Door Repair blog shared DIY garage door repair tips to solve these three common issues, which are shared below.

Problem #1: Garage Door Makes a Screeching Sound

Typically, a screeching garage door is caused by old, rusty garage door springs and rollers. Due to a build up of dirt and rust, garage doors are prone to this problem and this problem is quite normal.

Solution: Purchase a can of garage door lubricant to do the job for you and apply it on your garage door springs, garage door wheels, and main hinges. Open your garage door manually 2-3 times to see if the lubricant has made an effect. Apply even portions especially on the garage door wheels and also apply the lubricant on your garage door’s screws to loosen up the tension. Don’t forget to disconnect your garage door from the automatic opener (if you have any) before doing this DIY garage door repair fix. Note: try not to use WD-40’s because they tend to attract a lot of dirt and dust over time.

Problem #2: Garage Door Doesn’t Go Down All the Way

When your garage door goes down but doesn’t completely close itself before going back up, it might be cause by two problems: a faulty/misplaced sensor in the garage door opener track or an object blocking the eye of the garage door sensor.

Solution: To fix this problem, slide the sensor a little further down the garage door opener track until the door is able to close down properly. Proper sensor realignment is also a recommended solution if there is an object blocking the eye of the garage door sensor. If you are still having problems with your garage door after realigning the garage door sensor, the problem might be in the sensor itself and you might just need to purchase a new one. There are a lot of available options depending on your garage door manufacturer so choose the one that best suits your needs and preferences.

Problem #3: Remote-Operated Garage Door Won’t Open

Of all garage door problems, this is by far the most common. Typically, old batteries are the culprit. 80% of the time, replacing your garage door remote with a set of fresh batteries will cure this issue. However, there might be instances when battery replacements are not enough.

Solution: Check the range capacity of your garage door remote because the signal might not be received properly if you are too far from the garage door operator. Also, try reprogramming the remote control. If neither of these solutions work, you may need to seek the assistance of your nearest garage door repair shop or in rare occasions, replace your garage door remote control.
