Heating Your Garage: A Brief Guide to Heating and Insulating Garages

January 7, 2015/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

It finally pushed above zero at about noon today. Homeowners across the Chicagoland area have been facing frozen pipes, cars that won’t start, and garage doors that won’t open. The reason? It might be under-heated or under insulated garages.

When the temperature drops below zero outside, poorly insulated garages are hit hard by the elements, dropping in temperature to nearly match the outside.

Of course, homeowners with garages don’t have it nearly as bad as those with carports, but this begs the question-should you heat your garage? Heating your garage is a tough decision for homeowners, as the costs can stack up when you run a heater for an area that you may not be using.

Today, we are going to share with you a handy guide on whether or not to heat your attached or detached garage, allowing you to make the decision for yourself.

Why Heat Your Garage in the Winter?

If you use your garage for little more than storage and parking, heating your garage may seem inefficient, but there are some problems that can arise.

For instance, garage door openers may stop working due to contracting metal, hardened grease, or broken springs-all of which happen more often than not in winter months.

Secondly, heating your garage could help your car start more easily in the mornings. If one of the main reasons you have a garage is to protect your vehicle from the elements and cold weather, having a battery freeze up in your garage may not be on your list of 2015 desires.

Finally, if you use your garage for any secondary purpose-home office, laundry room, playroom, gym, pet housing, workspace, man cave, or even storage of your fridge/freezer-heating your garage is a must.

Arguments Against Heating Your Garage in Winter

The primary argument against heating a garage is the utility costs. If you are looking to estimate the costs of heating your garage, use the eHow BTU calculator and then the garage heater cost calculator. If the costs outweigh the benefits, don’t do it.

Insulation: A Necessity, Heated or Not

If you heat your garage and care about costs, insulation is a must. If you don’t heat your garage, but still want the benefits that come with a garage, insulation is also important. This is not to mention, that you are probably storing flammable materials like gas, oil, antifreeze, or coolant; running a car in the morning to warm it up, or working in the garage-a bothersome noise all year.

Insulation will help you to get the most of your heater, and will also prevent fumes from reaching living space (in an attached garage).

The other vital part of insulation, good for both summer and winter, is garage door insulation. Read our tips on insulating your garage door here.

Common Garage Heaters

If you choose to heat, there are some options that are better than others in terms of efficiency and effectiveness.

There are two types of natural gas heaters to consider for heating your garage: a forced-air garage heater that blows warm air like a conventional furnace, and a “low intensity” infrared tube heater that radiates heat. Family Handyman offers the following comparisons between forced air and infrared heaters, along with installation instructions.

Forced-Air Heater

Pros

  • Less expensive initial cost (50 percent less than comparable infrared heater)

Cons

  • Noisy
  • Loses heat quickly if garage door is opened (longer recovery time)
  • Heat rises and stratifies (the air is warmer at ceiling, cooler near floor), but you won’t notice it with a 7- or 8-ft. ceiling
  • Air movement tends to blow airborne dust around (woodworkers will have to shut down unit before staining and finishing projects)

Low-Intensity Infrared Tube Heater

Pros

  • Little noise
  • No air movement (dust settles)
  • Lower cost to operate
  • More uniform heat distribution (no stratification)
  • Quicker heat recovery if door is opened/closed (floor and objects retain heat)

Cons

  • Higher initial cost (50 percent more than forced-air)
  • Correct location of heater is critical (minimum 7 ft. from floor, 3 ft. from objects). Adequate headroom is also critical, because you can overheat if you’re working near the unit.

All in all, we at Blue Sky Builders, Inc. would like to remind you to stay warm this winter, and should you need a new garage now or in the future, to keep us in mind. Contact us to become one of the first we help in the coming construction season.

Our Favorite Christmas Lights Shows and Traditions in Chicagoland

December 24, 2014/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Here at Blue Sky Builders, Inc., we love the holiday season (who doesn’t?). Light shows, decorations, and more-this season brings the creative side of homeowners across the nation. Just as we love sharing our creative side designing and building garages in Chicago and the suburbs, we love seeing homeowners share their creative side through light shows and decorative schemes.

So, today, in honor of the holidays, we would like to share with you some our favorite light shows and holiday traditions from across the Chicagoland Area.

Our Favorite Chicagoland Christmas Traditions

Many of the best decorations and lights are merely a short drive away! See some of the best decorations near our hometown of Downers Grove!

Larsen Lights (Elburn)

Probably one of the most intense suburban light displays, the Larsen Light Show in Elburn features over a million LED lights, and takes over 3 months to set up. See the video below, synced to “Do You Want to Build a Snowman” from Frozen.

For more information, including their most popular “Fur Elise,” hours, and more, check out the twasthenightbefore.com.

See more of their displays, including 2005, 2006, and 2007 on their video highlights page. Not in the mood for driving there? Check out their live feed!

Lehnertz Avenue (Aurora)

For over 60 years, residents of Aurora and the surrounding areas have headed to the east side for the lights of Lehnertz Avenue. With both the stories of the nativity and a Peanuts themed Christmas display, this is surely worth the slow drive through the neighborhood.

Check out the Lehnertz Avenue Christmas Display Facebook Page for updates and information, and watch the video below.

Holiday Magic at Brookfield Zoo

Chicagoland’s largest lights festival surrounds you in the cheer of over 1,000,000 twinkling LED lights, ice carving, light shows, Santa and Mrs. Claus. You’re sure to feel the magic of the holidays!

Magnificent Mile Lights Festival

Although already passed, the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival occurs in November and features the lighting of the trees and more.

Mooseheart Holiday Lights (North Aurora)

Mooseheart Child City & School in North Aurora will be holding its Holiday Lights display starting Friday, Nov. 28, through New Year’s Eve. The 80 displays, covering a 2-mile-long driving loop, will be lit from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. every night.

How Much Can Windows and Doors Save You Come Tax Time?

December 17, 2014/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Once again, the House of Representatives (12/3) and Senate (12/16) have come together to approve taxes retroactive to 2014, just in time for Christmas. Now, this may not seem like the Christmas gift you may have wanted, but think of the consequences had this bill not passed. Yet another one-year extension, the extension will still allow homeowners to take advantage of this year’s purchases for their homes-specifically in energy efficient windows and doors.

So, this means that not only will new windows and doors be one of the most valuable things you can do for your home, it may even save you some cash come tax time.

The 25C Homeowner Tax Credit

An important part of the extension was the 10 percent “25C” homeowner income tax credit of up to $200 for installation of Energy Star qualified windows and skylights, and $500 for Energy Star exterior doors. Both are subject to a $500 lifetime limit per individual taxpayer.

To receive this credit, homeowners must install Energy Star rated windows or doors in 2014 and fill out form 5695 to be eligible. For the entire text, please visit Legal Information Institute, 26 U.S. Code § 25C – Nonbusiness energy property.

Key terms are as follows, provided by the IRS.

  • This credit is worth 10 percent of the cost of certain qualified energy-saving items you added to your main home last year. This includes items such as insulation, windows, doors and roofs.
  • You may also be able to claim the credit for the actual cost of certain property. This may include items such as water heaters and heating and air conditioning systems. Each type of property has a different dollar limit.
  • This credit has a maximum lifetime limit of $500. You may only use $200 of this limit for windows.
  • Your main home must be located in the U.S. to qualify for the credit.
  • Be sure you have the written certification from the manufacturer that their product qualifies for this tax credit. They usually post it on their website or include it with the product’s packaging. You can rely on it to claim the credit, but do not attach it to your return. Keep it with your tax records.

To print out IRS Form 5965, click here.

What if I Haven’t Installed in 2014?

Of course, this is a main concern of homeowners looking to take advantage of new windows or doors, but in the article “Tax Cuts in 2015?” author Rich Walker believes that this one year extension will be extended in the future, possibly permanently. Walker is quoted in his article:

“GOP lawmakers sought to make some of the tax cuts permanent, but a tentative package negotiated with the Senate ran afoul of a presidential veto threat. Still, the effort to reduce the tax load and level of uncertainty for businesses is not dead. The Wall Street Journal quotes Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), who will become House Ways and Means Committee chairman when the new Congress convenes in January, as saying that he will work to overhaul the federal tax code, with a focus on cutting the corporate tax rate.”

We can expect that these cuts will be in action in 2015, so if you are looking to save money come tax time 2016, be sure to get your windows and doors in 2015.

Blue Sky Builders, Inc. offers vinyl replacement windows for your home or garage. Coming in a wide variety of sizes, patterns, and colors, our windows are backed with an Alliance AssurancePlus Lifetime Warranty.

If you’re looking for doors, we have those too. Providing top quality steel entry doors, we install doors that ensure safety and security along with energy efficiency.

Is a Home Office in Your Garage a Good Idea?

December 4, 2014/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

We know the story-build a garage, park in it, have a safe environment for your vehicle. We know this because we’ve built garages for this purpose for over 35 years. Garages are convenient, safe, and great for storage. But we also know that garages can serve more than just for parking. With a recent study sharing that only 15% of two car garages are used for two cars, there are a multitude of options for that extra space. One option? The addition of a home office in place of this second car. Another? Build right above your garage.

Converting Part of Your Garage into a Home Office

Many people want more out of their garages. A great multi-functional room, the garage has made its mark most popularly as a space for a workshop. However, there are many other ideas for homeowners looking to build into their extra space including the ‘man cave,’ but one of the rooms that every home could use is the home office.

About Garages shared a recent post, and understands the value of creating a multi-purpose garage-something that can fit both a car and serve the needs of others, not an either/or situation. Providing two options, either half of a two car garage or a loft above a one car garage, author Thomas Mello provided tips on turning your garage into office space.

Build, Seal, and Insulate

A general recommendation for a garage that remains unfinished is sealing up cracks and gaps. Filling in spaces by windows with spray foam insulation and repairing any loose or rotted boards will help keep insects and rodents from invading your vehicles or stored belongings. Once a barrier has been created between the outside and the interior, the walls can be insulated so that the space can be heated and cooled appropriately for use.

Ample Heating and Cooling

No matter the situation, unless you live in a 70s climate all year long, both heating and cooling will make the space much more livable.

  • Cooling: Cooling will always be easier than heating a garage office, as cooling can be accomplished installing a window air conditioner, or by simply opening the windows, and running fans.
  • Heating:Unless you intend to be in the garage only at certain times, heating could become complex. Running a space heater 24/7 is inefficient and dangerous, but the author recommends one of three options.
    • Forced Air Heater: Hangs on the ceiling and works like a furnace, blowing dust and debris around in the process. Less expensive to install.
    • Infrared Heater: A type of tube heater that hangs on the wall off the ground. Radiates heat to create a warmer area without circulating dirt. More expensive to install, but more efficient to run.
    • Ductless Mini Split A/C with Heat Pump: A condenser sits outside the garage with cooling lines that run through a single hole in the wall of the garage. Serves a dual-purpose as an air-conditioner and heater for year-round office use.

What’s the Plan?

When you look to convert any room, it should be done with a plan. If you’re looking to get your garage in shape, Blue Sky Builders, Inc. is ready to help you develop one. Even if we’re unable to work in this upcoming winter, we are looking to fill early spring appointments and you could be one of the first we help next season.

What’s on Your Home Improvement Wish List?

November 28, 2014/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Welcome to the holiday season. While stores (and radio stations) may have been trying to convince you that the holiday season may have started the day after Halloween, here at Blue Sky Builders, Inc., we are the traditionalists who decorate our homes the day after Thanksgiving. With the kids writing their wish lists to Santa, we would like to ask you, “What’s on your home improvement wish list in 2015?”

Thanks to the annual “Cost vs. Value” Report, provided by Remodeling Magazine, we share with you a few of the things that you can add to your wish list that will improve the value.

Entry Door Replacement

One of the easiest things you can do that will recoup its value nearly completely for homebuyers is that of replacing your entry door.

Steel Entry Doors

Steel doors are durable and available with many different designs and colors. Homeowners could even elect to build sidelights or insets.

  • National Average Cost: $1,162
  • Cost Recouped: $1,122
  • Value of Replacement: 96.6%

Further, the value of replacement in the East North Central Region (Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, and Wisconsin is as follows:

  • ENC Region Average Cost: $1,167
  • Cost Recouped: $963
  • Value of Replacement: 82.5%

Drilling down to the Chicago, Illinois Region, values rise for replacement:

  • Chicago, IL Region Average Cost: $1,299
  • Cost Recouped: $1,138
  • Value of Replacement: 87.6%

Fiberglass Entry Door

Another durable option, also with many different designs available, fiberglass replacements recoup just a bit less cost than steel. Values are as follows:

  • National Average Cost: $2,822
  • Cost Recouped: $1,997
  • Value of Replacement: 70.8%

Values in the East North Central Region are as follows:

  • ENC Region Average Cost: $2,828
  • Cost Recouped: $1,997
  • Value of Replacement: 66.8%

Values in the Chicago, IL Region are as follows:

  • Chicago, IL Region Average Cost: $2,981
  • Cost Recouped: $2,142
  • Value of Replacement: 71.8%

Garage Door Replacements

With the garage taking up a large portion of the front of the house, a garage door replacement is definitely considered a high-value addition in many ways. If your garage door is starting to show weather or dents, not only would a replacement garage door improve the monetary value, but the beauty of your home.

Midrange Garage Door Replacement

A midrange garage door replacement is defined as: New door is uninsulated, single-layer, embossed steel with two coats of baked-on paint, galvanized steel hinges, and nylon rollers; 10-year limited warranty.

  • National Average Cost: $1,534
  • Cost Recouped: $1,283
  • Value of Replacement: 83.7%

Further, the value of replacement in the East North Central Region is as follows:

  • ENC Region Average Cost: $1,553
  • Cost Recouped: $1,285
  • Value of Replacement: 83.0%

Drilling down to the Chicago, Illinois Region, values skyrocket for replacement:

  • Chicago, IL Region Average Cost: $1,800
  • Cost Recouped: $2,722
  • Value of Replacement: 151.0%

Upscale Garage Door Replacement

New door is high tensile strength steel with two coats of factory-applied paint and foam insulated to minimum R-12 with thermal seals between pinch-resistant panels. Windows in top panel are ½-inch insulated glass. Hardware includes galvanized steel hinges and ball-bearing urethane rollers. Lifetime warranty.

  • National Average Cost: $2,791
  • Cost Recouped: $2,315
  • Value of Replacement: 82.9%

Further, the value of replacement in the East North Central Region is as follows:

  • ENC Region Average Cost: $2,822
  • Cost Recouped: $2,140
  • Value of Replacement: 76.0%

Drilling down to the Chicago, Illinois Region, values skyrocket for replacement:

  • Chicago, IL Region Average Cost: $3,101
  • Cost Recouped: $2684
  • Value of Replacement: 86.5%

So, a garage door replacement is definitely a good investment to add to the list of home improvement projects next year.

Garage Addition

Another decent investment-even if just for additional storage and car maintenance-is the addition of a garage to your property.

Midrange Garage Addition

Adding a new garage will help to protect property not covered as part of a home improvement project. With hailstorms hitting the region, the savings on insurance claims are an important consideration when looking at a new garage.

  • National Average Cost: $49,911
  • Cost Recouped: $34,598
  • Value of Replacement: 69.3%

The value of addition in the East North Central Region is as follows:

  • ENC Region Average Cost: $50,211
  • Cost Recouped: $30,491
  • Value of Replacement: 61.0%

Drilling down to the Chicago, Illinois Region, values rise for a garage addition:

  • Chicago, IL Region Average Cost: $56,661
  • Cost Recouped: $38,142
  • Value of Replacement: 67.3%

Upscale Garage Addition

  • National Average Cost: $82,311
  • Cost Recouped: $48,065
  • Value of Replacement: 58.4%

The value of addition in the East North Central Region is as follows:

  • ENC Region Average Cost: $82,900
  • Cost Recouped: $42,986
  • Value of Replacement: 52.0%

Drilling down to the Chicago, Illinois Region, values rise for a garage addition:

  • Chicago, IL Region Average Cost: $94,803
  • Cost Recouped: $49,605
  • Value of Replacement: 52.3%

Should You Get a Garage Floor Mat for Snow and Ice Protection?

November 19, 2014/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

It’s upon us. The snow is slowly falling down in Illinois and with it comes the beginning of the holiday season. It also means that winter is trickling into the area. A winter that many believe to be one of the most snow-laden winters in recent history. Just ask the people of Buffalo how badly the snow can get.

So, we’ve shown you how to winterize your garage, set up your storage effectively, and even keep the vermin out of your garage; but now we would like to introduce you to another way to protect your garage this winter-the garage floor mat.

Do You Need a Garage Floor Mat?

If you want to protect your floor, and haven’t yet put down garage epoxy or paint, the garage floor mat is your next best option. Relatively cost effective, the garage floor mat provides temporary protection to your garage floor, protecting it from stains, spills, and salt.

So, yes. If you haven’t taken other steps to prepare your garage, the garage floor mat is right for you. But what should you look for in a garage floor mat?

What To Look For In a Garage Floor Mat

While a garage floor mat may look like a simple rug or gym mat, it really needs to be much tougher. Some of the features to look for when shopping for a garage floor mat include:

  • resists chemical and petroleum spills
  • slip resistant
  • cushioning
  • textured or grooved to channel liquids and dirt
  • easy to clean
  • able to withstand vehicle traffic
  • heavy enough to resist sliding around
  • smooth and strong enough to allow gliding around on a creeper
  • able to handle enough water that is normally picked up as ice or snow

Types of Garage Floor Mats

Depending on your garage’s needs, there are different types of mats available to use. From containment to fabric to ribbed, these garage mats have different usage for different environments.

Containment Garage Mats

If you live in a climate with large snow falls, then a containment garage floor mat would be the best choice by far. These mats are designed to hold gallons of water for those days when the bottom of your car resembles more a snow plow than your daily vehicle. Featuring lifted edges to keep water in, the containment mat is easily cleaned with a wet vac or features a removable end that allows you to squeegee water out.

Fabric Garage Mats

For those of you who get the occasional snow fall and don’t feel the need to contain such large amounts of water and debris, there are two more mats that are worth your consideration. These work well at absorbing liquids from snowmelt and provide for a soft ant-slip surface. Made with waterproof, bonded backing, these mats will not let snowmelt, road salts, or deicing fluids reach your floor.

Ribbed Garage Floor Mat

Though technically not a containment mat for snow or water, the ribs do work at holding moderate amounts of liquid if you have a level floor. They can be mopped dry or use a wet vac to remove water and debris.

Can You Really Know Someone by Their Entry Door?

November 13, 2014/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Did you know that in addition to being your source for custom-built garages for over 35 years, we also provide installation of entry doors with different panel styles, colors, and designs available? Did you also know that your front door can say a lot about a person?

It’s true. Much like a necktie, the front door is the focal point of the home, and offers a powerful statement about the home’s owner. Throughout the spectrum of colors, each promotes a different trait to visitors or neighbors. So what does each color mean?

Red

The ultimate power color in Western Cultures, red, could mean many things to different societies. In feng shui, a red door says “welcome” and invites good energy. In early America, red doors signified a friendly household where a weary traveler might stop for the night. Today, Red is a bold choice for those who are not afraid of standing out on the block.

White

A crisp white door is for those who are (or would like to be) organized, neat and clean. Owners are also likely traditionalists, preferring the classic and timeless to the extreme.

Black

Black is a color of power, position and exclusivity. If your entry door is black, you are likely a person of some position, and you want the world to know it. A black front door projects strength, sophistication, power, and authority, indicating to all who enter or even passersby that the home is a serious place inhabited by a person of substance.

Green

If your door is green, you care about your home and your community and you have more traditional values. Psychologically speaking, green connotes health, safety, tranquility, and harmony, all highly desirable attributes for the home environment.

Blue

Shown to be the most popular color in many studies, a blue front door signals that the homeowner views his or her home as a place of refuge — calm, serene, and relaxing, the perfect retreat from an often harsh and demanding world.

Brown

Whether painted or stained, a brown front door looks natural and organic, but it can send mixed messages in terms of color psychology. On the one hand, brown conveys warmth, stability, and reliability, positive attributes all, but certain darker shades of brown signal a desire for privacy, even isolation.

Other Colors

If you are really gutsy, or have the house color to complement these, some of these colors could fit your personality.

  • Yellow: You are logical, yet creative. You tend to look at life with a positive attitude. You may even be a morning person
  • Turquoise: You crave emotional balance in your life, while pursuing big hopes and dreams. Although a bit idealistic, you believe anything is possible.
  • Orange: You are a social butterfly. You love to entertain and thrive on accomplishing new challenges.
  • Purple: A much different choice, those with purple entry doors are comfortable taking risks and dreaming big.

The entry door is the guide to the owner. If your front door is dilapidated, what does that say about you? Our qualified team is ready to help you install your next entry door. So when you’re ready, Contact us for an estimate and beautify your home for the holidays.

Advanced Features in Modern Garage Door Openers

November 5, 2014/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Does anyone remember when you had to open a garage door by hand? Invented in 1926 and popularized right here in Chicago after World War II, the electric garage door opener has been making the lives of homeowners easier ever since.

What was once opened by a keypad at the end of the driveway was followed by the fault ridden early radio transmitters, and has advanced since then to make the lives of homeowners easier each year. Now it’s 2014, and the technologies of garage door openers match the time. From WiFi-enabled smart garages to ephemeral opener signals, the garage of the future is here.

Today, we’d like to share some of the advanced features available in Blue Sky Builders, Inc.-Preferred LiftMaster garage doors.

MyQ® Technology

By tapping into the power of your Internet Gateway, you can monitor and control your home’s or garage door or lighting from your smartphone, tablet, or computer. With MyQ®:

  • Confidently know what’s going on at home
  • Monitor and control your Garage Door Opener and home lighting from anywhere (when paired with the Internet Gateway).
  • Receive email or text alerts so you always know the status of your garage door and home lighting.
  • Download the MyQ® mobile app for free. No annual activation fee required.

Security+ 2.0™

How about a signal that can never be hacked? With Security+ 2.0™, your garage door will never be sent the same code.

  • Safeguard your household with Security+ 2.0™-with every click, a new code is sent to the Garage Door Opener, so the door opens only for you.
  • Stay out of harm’s way with audio and visual warnings when the garage door is about to close.
  • Don’t get stuck in the dark. The Motion Detector activates the Garage Door Opener’s lights as soon as you enter the garage.
  • Remain safe with the Protector System. It projects a light beam across the garage door opening, preventing it from closing if anything interrupts it.
  • Ensure your door cannot be forced open with a Power Lock Deadbolt.

That’s just two of the top features available on modern garage doors. We have come a long way since one garage door opener opened the entire neighborhood’s doors or when an overhead plane transmission would open an overhead door.

We can only look forward to the future of the garage. While we wait, we would like to invite you to contact us for garage door opener repairs before you’re left out in the cold this winter.
