Are You Considering a Garage Expansion?

March 24, 2016/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Whether you are looking to house your in-laws, store an extra vehicle, or add a home office to your property, a garage expansion is a great option to consider. Increasing the size of your garage can be done in a number of ways, and the garage specialists at Blue Sky Builders, Inc. can help you explore the possibilities. An expansion can be done quickly, cost effectively, and can help add value to your home as well as functionality. When deciding whether to expand your existing garage or not, here are few things to consider.

What Is the Purpose of Your Expansion?

The first step in the garage expansion process is determining what the extra square footage will be used for. Are you looking to add living space to your home? Do you need extra storage? Or maybe you are considering adding a workshop to your home? Determine what the extra space will be used for, and go from there.

If extra living space is your goal, consider a FROG, which stands for a finished room over garage. This additional space could be used as a home gym, office, or extra space for guests. Or go a step further, and add a separate apartment above your garage. A new apartment above your garage could be used to accommodate guests, parents and grandparents, or independent teenagers and young adults. Looking for some extra income, or a way to offset the costs of your expansion? Consider adding a separate entrance to the apartment and rent the unit.

If more square footage for storage is needed, maybe for an extra vehicle, consider expanding outwards. If you have yard space available, you could knock out an exterior wall of your garage and expand. This expansion could accommodate new vehicles, or allow space for a workshop or home gym. When considering expanding outwards, try to plan for the future. Is your family growing? Might you need more room in the future? A garage specialist can help you map out your expansion so it can continue to meet your needs for years to come.

Consider Plumping and Electrical

Depending on the purpose of your expansion, you may need to rework some of the plumbing and electrical wiring in your garage, or have new work done. Adding a laundry room? Remember to factor in the plumbing when mapping out your expansion? Adding a workstation? Maybe some rewiring would be beneficial to allow for plenty of outlets where you need them. A garage professional can review your project with you to ensure your expansion will fit your needs.

Is Starting Fresh a Better Option?

If you are working with an older garage in need of repairs, it may be cheaper to demolish the structure and start fresh. A garage specialist can inspect your property and help you determine if expansion is a good option, or if a new garage may better suit your needs. Building a new garage gives you creative control over the aesthetic and functionality of the space.

Check with Your Local Government

Most communities have some type of regulation governing home and garage expansion. Both new construction and additions to existing properties must meet local, state, and national safety regulations. For example, in Downers Grove, home and garage additions require an approved building permit. Allow yourself time to complete the application process. Downers Grove officials say permits typically take 10 days to review, and the costs of the process depend on the type of expansion you are undertaking. Depending on your project, property inspections may be needed.

On a side note, remember to keep your neighbors in mind. If your expansion is going to be lengthy or noisy, consider notifying your neighbors in advance.

Work with a Professional

Most of us do not possess the skills or knowledge to complete a garage expansion successfully on our own. Injuries do happen, and it is also possible to mess up the expansion and have to redo your work. Instead of attempting the project on your own, call us at Blue Sky Builders, Inc.. Why You May Need to Replace a Garage

March 17, 2016/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Spring is the perfect time to consider updating your garage. How do you know when it is time to rebuild, replace, or remodel? Check out a few signs that may indicate a garage change is right for you.

Your Garage Is No Longer Safe and Efficient

Problems with the structure of your garage can be dangerous. If you have water damage, holes in the roof or walls of your space, or any other structural problems, a garage expert can help you determine if a remodel or rebuild is necessary. You need a space that is safe for your family, and one that stays habitable year round. Additionally, a run down garage will negatively impact the value of your home.

You Want More Living Space

A typical garage accounts for a large amount of a home’s total square footage. Whether you are looking for an in-home office, an extra bedroom, or a new workshop, a garage remodel is a great way to add extra living space to your home. Worried about where to park your cars? A detached garage can be built on your property quickly and at a low cost, so you can add extra living space to your home and still have storage for your vehicles.

Need a New Garage Door?

How can you tell when it is time to swap your old garage door out for a newer, more efficient model? Your old door may still work, but is it safe? Does it help boost your curb appeal? Here are a few indicators it may be time for a new garage door:

  • Noise and breakdowns: If your garage door is constantly making noises or breaking down when in use, you most likely need an upgrade. Maintenance may solve the problems temporarily, but frequent repairs can quickly become costly, especially when you add in labor costs and purchasing new parts.
  • The door is no longer efficient: Modern garage doors are great at keeping your space warm in the winter and cool in the summer. A new garage door can help you keep your space habitable year round.
  • Increased curb appeal: No matter how the rest of the front of your home looks, an old, antiquated garage will stick out like a sore thumb. You want a garage door design that matches your home and compliments your facade. Newer garage doors come in a variety of designs, so you can be sure you are doing the most to boost your curb appeal.
  • You are remodeling: If you are converting your garage into additional living space, a new door can be a nice touch. Consider a door with tinted windows or another contemporary design to compliment your new bedroom or office space.

Better Storage Options

Most families rely on their garage for storage. If your current garage is at capacity, rebuilding or remodeling gives you the freedom to customize your storage options. You can build overhead storage, install great shelving units, and ensure your family has the space to store everything you need. Whether your family is growing, or you recently purchased an extra vehicle, a garage update can help.

Boost Your Curb Appeal

Your garage may take up some 40 percent of the front of your home. You want a space that catches eyes, not detracts from your property value. If your garage no longer fits in with the facade of your home, it is most likely time to rebuild or remodel. A garage door replacement can do the trick, but if greater structural changes are needed, a garage specialist can help you determine if a remodel or rebuild is a good option. In both cases, you will have the freedom to ensure your updated garage fits with the aesthetic of your home, helping you boost your property value.

How a Garage Can Add Value to Your Home

March 10, 2016/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Potential homebuyers often put together a list of “must haves” to help them narrow down their search while looking for houses. These lists detail what a future homebuyer could not live without – things like a washing machine, a pool, a fireplace, or air conditioning. Everyone’s list is different, but most include one important thing: a garage. Is no garage a deal breaker for potential homebuyers? Will adding a garage increase your property value? What can you do to improve your existing garage to boost your property value? Here we discuss ways a garage can impact the sale of your home, and what you should know moving forward putting your home on the market.

Is No Garage A Deal Breaker?

Most modern home buyers demand parking, but do they need a covered attached or detached garage? In many cases, yes, but specialists say the answer depends on a number of factors including the neighborhood, value and size of the home, and the area’s climate. Homebuyers would likely pass up on a home without a garage in a neighborhood where most homes do have a garage. Additionally, homes in colder climates or in areas with frequent rain and snow may be tough to sell without a garage. Inexpensive homes may sell without a garage, especially because a new buyer can add a garage inexpensively, but most middle of the road to high end homes are expected to have at least a two car garage.

Will Adding A Garage Increase My Property Value?

In most cases, building an attached or detached garage on a property without an existing garage is a smart move. Some realtors say that homeowners investing in a garage could see a two to two and a half time return on investment. Others point out that a two-car garage, attached or detached, can add $30,000 to the value of a home, and a smaller, one car garage could add $15,000 or more in value.

The size of a garage can also impact selling price, as shown by a recent survey. The study, which compared single-family homes, shows that the as the number of parking spaces within a garage increases, so does the value of a home. For example, a home with a single car garage may go for $250,000, but a similar home with a three car garage could sell for nearly $300,000. Homeowners are encouraged to research their market or consult a real estate professional before deciding to build a garage on their property for resale purposes, but in most cases, specialists say the choice will increase value.

When building, realtors say there a number of factors to keep in mind. First, homebuyers tend to favor homes where the garage is tucked to the side of a house, as homes with garages facing the street tend to be less visually attractive. An electric door opener is also beneficial to install. Homeowners are also encouraged to build their garage with a little extra space for storage, as many potential buyers require storage space within the garage. Also, the exterior of the garage is important, and should match the existing exterior design of the home.

What Can Be Done to Improve My Existing Garage?

If your home already has a garage, there are a few steps you can take to ensure the space helps boost your property value. First, the garage should be cleaned and well organized. Four out of five realtors say that a unorganized, messy garage can have a negative impact on potential homebuyers. If the exterior needs work, consider new siding or a fresh paint job. Be sure that your garage matches the style of the rest of your home. Also, many realtors report that successful homeowners demonstrate to potential buyers how their garage is used for storing more than just vehicles. In fact, over 75 percent of realtors say the garage should be just as clean and organized as every other room in the home to increase value and likelihood of selling.

Which Garage Style Should You Choose?

March 3, 2016/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Building a new garage or remodeling your preexisting structure can boost your property value and provide your home with some additional curb appeal. As winter finally comes to an end, many homeowners are pursuing their dreams of a perfect garage. With the wide variety of different styles available, there is no better time to check out a new garage, but choosing which style to go with can be challenging. When deciding what type of garage to build, there are a variety of factors to consider. Should you choose a tried a true gable or hip style garage, or unleash your creative side and pursue a custom garage? The possibilities may seem endless, but the specialists at Blue Sky Builders, Inc. are here to help.

What to Consider When Choosing a Garage Style?

Different garage styles suit different purposes, so it’s important that you choose a style that fits your needs. To help with your decision making, we recommend you consult with a garage specialist who can help you make the smartest choice. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • How many cars will be parked in the garage;
  • Will the space be needed for other storage too;
  • How can the garage match the exterior of my home;
  • Where should the entrance of the garage be; and
  • One door or two doors?

When reviewing with a contractor, your answers to these questions will point you in the direction of a garage style that will benefit you the most.

Gable Garage

Gable garages are a popular choice that feature a roof with two symmetrical slopes that come together above the garage door to form a triangle shape. Gable garages are relatively simple to frame and are often less expensive to build when compared with other options. The slant of the roof can be adjusted during construction to best match the existing style of the home. While gable garages are sturdy, they are not best suited for windier climates, as strong winds could cause them to collapse. The high ceilings of this design allow for additional storage space within the garage, a plus for homeowners hoping for extra storage. Homeowners can choose front-gable, side-gable, or reverse-gable designs, depending on their needs and design choices.

Gambrel Garage

A gambrel design is similar to a gable garage, except instead of only one roof section on each side of the garage, gambrel garages have two, making them closely resemble a barn. Also known as “barn style” garages, these structures are better protected against strong wind, and provide greater storage than a gable design. If you are hoping to add a loft or an additional living space to your structure, a gambrel design may be the right choice. Gambrel garages have steep sides, so they are great at handling rain and snow.

Hip Garage

If you are looking for extra protection from wind and other elements, a hip garage design may be right for you, as this type of garage design offers overhang on all four sides of the structure. Hip garages are extremely common and are economical to build. The roof has four sides that all meet at the top of the garage, so while runoff can leave easily, overhead storage is decreased. This option is affordable, can easily be built to match your home, and with the right touches can boost your property value. Additionally, this design is great for detached garages, as the lower roof will not distract from the view of your home.

Custom Garage

Looking to add an extra flair to your property? A custom garage can be built based on one of the other design styles, but with add-on items, like a deck or patio. A custom garage can be built to fit your needs, be it additional living space, extra vehicle storage, or an attached outdoor car port. When it comes to a custom garage, be sure to work with specialists that can design and build based around your specific needs.

Ways to Deal with Your Neighbor’s Rundown Property

February 25, 2016/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

So, you are about ready to sell your house. You have done everything possible – cleaned, organized, remodeled, repaired – to ensure you get the best offers on your home. There is one tricky area, however, that you do not have as much control over; your neighbors. While your neighbors crumbling garage across the street may not have bothered you, potential home buyers could be scared away. How do you stop the neighborhood eyesore from lowering your property value? While there is no single, simple solution to the problem, here are five potential tactics you can use to encourage your neighbor to tidy up their property.

Talk to Your Neighbor

This strategy may seem pretty basic, but you would be surprised how many people are simply unwilling to have a difficult conversation. While asking your neighbor to clean up their mess may be challenging, there are strategic ways to soften the blow. Try saying, “You know, the more my house sells for, the more your house will sell for if you ever decide to move.” Add another nice touch like a bottle of wine to show your neighborly spirit. If direct conversation is hard, send over a very polite note and a gift.

Do the Dirty Work Yourself

In many cases, the neighborhood eyesore is home to elderly individuals or those unable to properly clean. If your neighbor is unable to properly maintain their property, it may be time for you to step in and do it yourself.

Offering to help is not just for elderly neighbor situations. If you notice your neighbor’s home or garage in need of repairs, ask if you can help. As one home restoration specialist says “Most people would be surprised how much they can convince people to do when they offer to help do it.”

Get in Touch with Your HOA

If your neighborhood has a homeowners’ association (HOA), take advantage of it. One of the reasons HOAs exist is to help keep property values within the neighborhood from declining. You can always try more diplomatic methods first, but if it comes down to it, your HOA can help pressure your neighbor into maintaining their property.
They may issue fines to any neighbor not in compliance, or in other cases, they may simply fix the issues and then bill the neighbor.

Call City Officials

If you have been in a long going battle with your neighbor, and all else has failed, it may be time to reach out to your local government. It may be a situation where your neighbor is actually in violation of local codes and can be forced to clean up. Your best bet is to do this well before putting your home on the market, as in many cases the city may give your neighbor 90 days to comply.

You may also discover that the rundown home is a bank-owned foreclosure. In this case, you can likely get in touch with the bank that owns the property and insist that they maintain it.

Let Your Garage Increase Your Property Value

Modern home buyers expect a lot when searching for a home, and one area in particular that they focus on is the garage. At Blue Sky Builders, Inc., our team of garage experts can help you ensure your garage is in tip-top shape and ready to sell. We offer creative garage design and remodeling that can boost your property value and provide interior touches like smart garage storage and lighting that will make potential buyers do a double take.Visit Blue Sky Builders, Inc. online or call 630-852-8485 to learn more about the services we provide today.

2016 Garage Trends You Need to Know About

February 17, 2016/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

While we might not admit it all the time, most of us care about our neighbors’ perceptions of our homes. We manicure our lawns, keep our sidewalks shoveled, and maintain our homes’ curb appeal, just to ensure we stand out, or at least fit in with our neighbors. It makes sense that many homeowners this year are focusing on one of the main focal points of their homes: their garage.

The garage is often the largest room within a home, and the garage door is the largest entry way into most homes. A little garage updating can go a long way to make your home stand out from the crowd and boost your property value. If you are hoping to make your garage the talk of the block this year, stay up-to-date with these 2016 garage trends.

Garage Door Trends

Today’s homeowners only have one chance to make a first impression, so many are focusing on adding a little pow to their garage doors.

Doors Are Getting Bigger: Larger garage doors tend to stand out from the crowd, so many homeowners are going for bigger doors during homebuilding and remodeling. Larger doors allow for more creativity and can help increase curb appeal.

Use Unique Material: Most basic garage doors are constructed with aluminum or steel, but using unique materials can really make your garage door pop. Turn heads by using copper metal or a door with glass panels.

Modern Windows: People often install windows in their homes to increase curb appeal and add natural lighting. Why not do the same with your garage door? Choosing a door with windows will allow natural light to fill your garage, and can really add a nice architectural element to the exterior of your home. Many homeowners are also choosing large windows, as they allow the best views from the garage.

A Splash of Color: This year, homeowners are choosing colors for their garage doors that compliment the design of their home and the landscaping around it. Ditch the classic white garage door look in exchange for a color that will boost your curb appeal or provide a new, modern look to your home.

A Multi Purpose Space

Garages are no longer only for parking cars. Many homeowners are transforming their garages to fit the needs of their household. Some convert the space into a home gym, others a movie theater, workshop, or bedroom. As garages are more frequently being converted into additional living space, homeowners this year are looking for ways to make their garages more habitable.

Many homeowners are want the ability keep their garages climate controlled. To do so, they are choosing insulated garage doors, for a number of reasons. They prevent harsh temperatures outside from affecting the garage, and also help reduce outside noise, which is especially important if the garage is being transformed into a sleeping space.

New Garage Technology

Homeowners are also taking advantage of the abundance of new garage technology available. Did you know you can open and close your garage door with an app on your smartphone or tablet? New smart garage door openers help provide peace of mind to homeowners and are convenient and easy to use. Many new garage door openers also have the ability to store power, so they can still open and close a few times during a power outage.

New Organizational Ideas

It is not just the outside of the house that homeowners are focusing on this year. Nobody wants to lift their garage door and let their neighbors see the mess hiding within their garage. This year, try a few trendy new garage organization ideas, including overhead storage, additional cabinetry, and gridwalls.

Whether you are looking to build a new garage, remodel your existing garage, or simply make a few upgrades, the specialists at Blue Sky Builders, Inc. are here to help. Visit us online, or call 630-852-8485 to speak to one of our team members today.

Wintertime Garage Safety Tips

February 10, 2016/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Even the most insulated garages can prove hazardous in the winter. From carbon monoxide, to frozen garage doors, the average household garage can quickly become dangerous if left unchecked and unmaintained during the winter. If you are hoping to keep yourself and your family safe for the remainder of the season, pay attention to these common cold weather garage safety concerns.

What Is Safe to Store In a Garage during the Winter?

Most Americans use their garage for multiple purposes, with one of the most common being household storage. The garage is a perfect place to store those odds and ends items that did not find a permanent home inside the house, but what items are risky to leave out in the garage during cold months?

  • Paint: People commonly store cans of paint in their garage, but both summer and wintertime conditions can damage paint. Cold temperatures will cause your paint to not last as long, and paint cans stored on cement floors tend to run faster than cans placed on a shelf or another surface.
  • Canned Food: Canned foods and other canned items like sodas can easily freeze in cold conditions, and should not be stored in garages that are not climate controlled. While frozen canned food can be thawed, the quality is diminished after freezing. Garage specialists also suggest avoiding storing food in garages due to the possibility of attracting rodents, which could lead to health issues.
  • Electronic Items: Extreme cold can be damaging to household electronic items like televisions, computers, and DVD players.
  • Refrigerators: When people replace a refrigerator within their home, they frequently send the old one to the garage. While having an extra fridge and freezer in your garage is great for storage, cold weather can cause issues. When temperatures outside become colder than the interior of your refrigerator or freezer, your appliance may stop working, and your goods may sour or thaw.
  • Any Equipment with Water: If you have a power washer or another tool that uses water, use caution when storing them in the garage. Anything with water could freeze, meaning that your power washer could crack or burst.

Winter Garage Door Danger

Many people are surprised to learn that garage doors can quickly become problematic during the winter. Not only can they freeze to the ground, making opening and closing difficult, but cold temperatures can cause the screws, springs, and other metal parts found within your garage door to expand and contract. This can lead to your door failing to open or close properly, and can be a hazard to you and your family. Specialists say to combat this, be sure that all the parts within your garage door are lubricated, and that the area underneath your garage door is kept clear of snow and ice.

Carbon Monoxide Danger

Storing your vehicle in your garage, while beneficial during the wintertime, can be dangerous if proper safety precautions are not followed. Carbon monoxide is an extremely dangerous toxic gas produced by engines found in cars and trucks. The gas is odorless and invisible, and the average car can produce a deadly amount of carbon monoxide in only a few short minutes. While starting your car in your garage may seem like a good idea, allowing carbon monoxide to build up in an enclosed space can lead to dizziness, flu like symptoms, immobility, and death. In fact, in under ten minutes the gas can reach fatal levels. Poison specialists say even with the garage door open, a car should not be left running within the space. Garage owners should instead start their vehicles and immediately get them outside. This way, the garage does not fill with the toxic gas, which can also easily seep inside a home.

While these are just a few potential dangers your garage could pose this winter, it is clear that proactive garage maintenance and repair can help reduce any danger to your family. At Blue Sky Builders, Inc., our garage specialists are available to inspect your garage and alert you of any dangers. We can also recommend when upgrades are needed, and have affordable options for remodeling and rebuilding. We also offer creative garage design and storage ideas to help you better use your space. Is Your Garage a Victim of Winter Damage?

February 3, 2016/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Winter can be a lot of fun. The picturesque snow is perfect for bundling up and catching snowflakes, sledding, or skiing. For your garage, however, winter conditions can lead to damage. Snow, ice, and snow melting products are all capable of damaging your garage in many different ways. This winter, be on the lookout for a few potential ways snow and ice may be damaging your garage.

Your Garage Floor

Water damage to your garage flooring can lead to cracks and slippery patches that put you and your family at risk of falling. If you park your car within your garage, ice and snow can easily fall from your car and lead to built up pools of water left on your garage floor. Unfortunately, in many cases, water left on garage floors is not noticed soon enough, and if left over long periods of time, can lead to damage to the structure of your garage. Preventative measures can be taken, if done early enough in the year, but extensive winter damage to your garage floor may require repairs or replacement.

Your Garage Roof

Snow and ice can build up on your roof and lead to major problems. Icicles hanging from the edges of the roof of your garage have the potential to fall, meaning they could be dangerous to anyone standing beneath them. Additionally, icicles may indicate a larger problem; an ice dam. An ice dam is a formation of ice on the edge of your roof that prevents water and snow melt from draining. Instead, the water pools up, trapped behind the dam, and can build up underneath shingles or seep through your roof. This could damage your garage’s ceiling, sheetrock, and paint. Removing ice dams can be difficult, and in many cases, removing the dam also removes the shingles frozen to it. Check out our recent blog post on ice dams to learn more about what they are and how to prevent them.

Snow build up on your roof can also be dangerous. Last winter, there were reports of garage roofs collapsing from the weight of the snow. An unstable roof could do real harm to anyone stuck in the garage during a collapse.

Your Garage Door

Wintertime conditions can also be damaging to your garage door. Your garage door opener may become stripped or damaged if the door is frozen or attached to the floor due to ice melt. If the opener is too strained while trying to lift the door, it may break, requiring repair.

The Contents of Your Garage

It is not just the structure of your garage at risk this winter. The contents of your garage could also potentially be harmed by freezing conditions. If temperatures drop, your vehicle may freeze, along with other items in the garage. If any item has any water in it, it has the potential to freeze and crack. Even fuel and paint can be damaged by too cold of conditions.

What Can Be Done?
While precautions can be taken to prevent major damage, if extensive damage has already been done, the best choice is often a garage replacement. At Blue Sky Builders, Inc., our qualified team will happily work with you to build a new garage of your dreams. LED Lighting for Your Garage

January 30, 2016/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

It can happen to anybody. You pull up into your garage one evening, step out of your car, and reach for the light switch, only to discover that your overhead garage light has burned out. Even the tidiest of garages can be a bit creepy at night, and nobody wants to feel like they are trapped in a scene from a scary movie. Or, perhaps you are working on a project in your garage, but the dim fluorescent or incandescent lighting in your space is making completing the task difficult. If you are sick of dealing with lighting issues in your garage, consider switching to LED lighting. LED (light-emitting diodes) is one of today’s fastest growing lighting technologies, and also one of the most energy efficient options you can choose to install. LED lights are simple to use, will brighten any space, and have a much longer life span than other lighting options.

Energy Efficient

LED is a highly energy efficient technology, and many believe that widespread LED use in America could radically change the amount of energy consumed each year. Most residential LEDs are significantly more energy efficient compared to other options. In fact, products labeled with an ENERGY STAR rating use at least 75 percent less energy than typical light bulbs. For homeowners, switching to LED lights can mean savings on their energy bills. Most users report a drop in their monthly energy bill when they made the switch to LED lighting. On average, one traditional incandescent light bulb costs $4.80 per year to operate. Fluorescent bulbs tend to cost around $1.20 per year, but by far the cheapest option is LED, with each LED light typically costing only $1.00 per year.

They Last Longer

LED lighting lasts far longer than any other option, and in fact, many LED light fixtures come with the bulbs preinstalled. Your standard light bulb lasts for an average of 1,000 hours of usage, while fluorescent bulbs tend to last about 10,000 hours. LEDs typically last about 25,000 hours. LEDs are extremely beneficial for hard-to-reach places and outdoor lighting, where replacing bulbs can be even more of a struggle.

They Provide Better Light

For most households, the garage is used for a variety of purposes. If you use your garage as a work station, LED lighting options will better lighten up your space. LEDs put out even, consistent light that has a far reach and helps eliminate shadows. While LEDs may be small (they are typically about the size of a flake of pepper), they are much better at illuminating spaces when compared to other options.

Additionally, many homeowners have complained that CFL bulbs (fluorescent bulbs) take too long to reach their full brightness. LED lighting, on the other hand, starts up instantly and is immediately at full brightness. When compared side by side, LED bulbs were found to still be significantly brighter than fluorescent bulbs, even after the fluorescent bulbs had been given time to reach maximum brightness. LED users have also reported that the light that LED bulbs gives off is warmer than other lighting options, and looks more aesthetically pleasing.

How You Can Use LED Lights in the Garage

LED lighting can be used in a variety of ways, both inside and outside of your home and garage. LED bulbs are extremely bright, making them a great choice for exterior lighting. LED panel lights are also available, which are great for illuminating work spaces and can hang from your ceiling and light up your entire space.

America’s Most Famous Garages

January 20, 2016/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Modern American garages are a far cry from their 100-year-old predecessors. From their start as converted carriage houses used to store the automobiles of America’s wealthiest citizens, garages have transformed into a household necessity that every home buyer has come to expect. No modern home is complete without at least a single car garage, and most of today’s garages do more than simply store cars. From man-caves to apartments to home offices, garages are continuously remodeled, re-purposed, and reorganized to suit the many needs of American families. Life in the United States is centered around the automobile, so it makes sense that, over time, famous garages have popped up all across the country. American garages have been the birthplace of many Fortune 500 companies, provided an early studio for many of today’s famous musicians, and have been used by wealthy Americans to house impressive car collections.Take a look at a few of America’s most famous and impressive garages.

The Birthplace of Apple Inc.

Nowadays, it is almost impossible to go anywhere without seeing an Apple Product. From iphones to ipads to MacBook computers, Apple’s dominance of the technology industry in America is astounding and continuing to grow. Did you know that Steve Jobs, founder of Apple Computers Inc., started his company in a Los Altos, CA garage in the late 1970’s? Now designated a ‘historic resource,’ 2066 Crist Drive, or the garage attached to the home at 2066 Crist Drive, was the birthplace of Apple computers and is considered one of America’s most famous garages.

Google in a Garage

Apple is not the only tech giant that got its start in a garage. Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin set up the first ever Google work space in a garage in Menlo Park, California in September 1998. Of course, if you go online at all, you know the rest of the story. Google has become another inescapable internet giant. Interestingly enough, Google’s co-founders rented the garage where they started the company from Susan Wojcicki, who is now the CEO of popular website YouTube.

John Travolta’s Florida Mansion

John Travolta’s massive success has afforded him some pretty nice luxuries, and the garage attached to his Ocala, Florida home is certainly one of them. The garage houses 15 cars, a private jet, and Travolta’s very own jumbo jet, which he flies himself. Travolta built the home himself, and put in not only space for his automobiles and planes, but airstrips as well, so he can take off or land directly at his home.

Adam Carolla’s Hollywood Hills Paradise

You likely know Adam Carolla from his years of being a radio personality, but you may not know that he is an avid car collector, and owner of one of the most famous garages in Hollywood Hills. Featuring multiple sports cars, an office, and an entertainment lounge, Carolla’s garage is a paradise for car enthusiasts everywhere. Carolla’s garage also features an elevator that can lift cars into a glass showroom where they can be displayed.

Big Dog Garage

Late night television personality Jay Leno is the owner of an incredible collection of over 200 cars that would make any auto-enthusiast swoon. To house his massive collection, Leno has a 17,000 square foot garage in southern California that is known as the Big Dog Garage. Leno has an extensive collection, including McLarens, Ferraris, and Lamborghini’s, all of which he drives. Leno has even stated that he drives his extremely rare collectible cars. The Big Dog Garage also houses equipment used to maintain cars such as sheet metal machines and welding tools.

Walt Disney’s First Animation Studio

Entertainment giant Walt Disney started his company in a small garage in Garden Grove, North Hollywood. Back in 1923, Disney transformed his uncle Robert’s garage into an animation studio, and shortly after started producing a serious known as Alice Comedies. Disney has said he considers the garage the location of “the start of the Disney company first known as the Disney Brothers Studio.” While Disney moved on to a larger space as his career took off, Disney fans still leave souvenirs and memorabilia in front of the garage, now a part of the Stanley Ranch Museum.

Nike’s Classic Waffle Sole

Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman came up with Nike’s classic waffle-patterned sole in his garage in 1972. He poured urethane rubber into a waffle iron, and while the rubber ruined his waffle maker, the idea of the “waffle” sole was born, and shoes with waffle soles went into production by the mid 1970’s.

While these are just a few of America’s most famous garages, it is clear to see that garages are a fixture of American life, and are used for a wide variety of purposes. What do you do with your garage? Perhaps your space will be the birthplace of your best selling invention. Perhaps your child’s small town garage band will go on to the Billboard Charts. The possibilities are endless.
